Proxy

Hi, i'm trying to play with SageTV, and need it to work with a Proxy server as unfortunately I am stuck behind a University network and need to use their proxy to access the internet, however it seems SageTV cannot use a proxy? Please tell me this isn't so, I really want to play around with SageTV but this is a show stopper. Is there any hacks to get it to work with a proxy?

Thanks

You will need to be a little more specific, as to the network access needed. Is this a Placeshifter that can't reach the server, or a client that can't see the server, or a server that can't download epg data, or a server that can't see network encoders, or a client that can't see YouTube or the like, or something else? I don't use proxies myself, but others could probably help once they have more info. It may also help to indicate a little about your hardware, version of SageTV, whether you are running in service mode or not, and what errors you are seeing, etc.

Hey,

Sorry i'll be a bit more specific.

I've not tried placeshifter or anything like that, for now i'm just trying to get the standalone software working.
It cannot get EPG data, or cannot use youtube or anything like that, it cannot use the internet at all. I currently access the internet via a VPN which runs a www proxy for everything on port 80, which IE and firefox are set up to use. However SageTV does not seem to follow the IE settings unlike most applications and so fails to get any data while trying to download EPG infomation or access youtube.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm currently using MediaPortal for my server-client configuration but would definitely like to give SageTV a try as MediaPortal is a little too unstable for me.

Did you make sure all the right ports are open for the EPG to get its data? Check the manual for the specific ports that needs to be opened.

does your proxy support SOCKS? If it does, then we may have some options.

Here's a wrapper that works with SOCKS proxy servers.

Unfortunately it's a HTTP only proxy i've already thought of that. Looks like i'm at the end of the road at the moment then?

Here's instructions from a post that used a product called Proxy Cap. It was used for placeshifter.

Quote:
I have it working:

1. Open the preferences page.
2. Click on the little square box - to create a New Proxy Server.
3. Enter the Address of your Company Proxy Server and Port, Select HTTPS as the type.
4. Go to the Rules section.
5. Click on the little square box again to Create a New Rule.
6. Select the Rule type: Tunnel through proxy.
7. Select the Proxy (the one you just created) to Tunnel.
8. Specify SageTVPlaceshifter as the Program to Tunnel by browsing to c:\program files\SageTV\Placeshifter.
9. Enter you home's IP Address - this is the IP address of where your SageTV Server resides.
10. Enter the Destination Port: 31099.
You should be able to get SageTV to work with it.

Proxycap
Quote:
ProxyCap enables you to tunnel Internet applications through HTTP, SOCKS v4, and SOCKS v5 Proxy Servers. You can tell ProxyCap which applications will connect to the Internet through a proxy and under what circumstances. This is done through a user friendly interface, without the need to reconfigure any of your Internet clients. ProxyCap provides flexible rule system and allows you to define your own "tunneling" rules. You can add a new rule with just a few mouse clicks.
