Easy Screen-shots within SageTV?

I use the video from my HTPC for screen-shots occasionally - sometimes for my blog. Anyway, the way I do this now is to open the recorded video in VLC or VideoReDo and take the snapshots, then close those programs and reopen SageTV.

What I'd like to do is to have a "snapshot" button on my remote that would take the screenshot for me while watching (or while paused) in SageTV (I use SageMC.) Even better would be if I those screenshots could be added to a photo folder in my imports folders and I could then browse them in SageTV Photos. Even better would be to be able to upload selected photos or screenshots to flickr or a blog

Any of this sound feasible? Is there a way to do the screen shot thing within SageTV already that I'm not thinking of?

You may want to take a look at Snag-it by Techsmith. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to capture a screen. It is about the most feature complete screen capture program out there.

Easy

Hit the Print Screen button and paste into your favorite image editor, viola !

Map a button to Print Screen on your remote.

Yes it will capture video stills too

I was going to say that, but I'm at work (so I couldn't check to make sure it worked first). That's how I usually do any sort of screen capture for any other reason.

Never underestimate the power of MS Paint.

I am sure there is a way to do this but to clarify, I think he wants it saved to file without leaving the SageMC UI. So print screen is a good first step but now it needs to be pasted to something. That is where a program such as Snag-it may come into play. With it loaded, I believe you can setup a key combination to do all the steps. Maybe not post on a blog though.

Also, doesn't Bob's video editing plugin do a screen capture? I thought it did but I could be mistaken.

I once started to look at incorporating this functionality via SageTVTranscoder, but I hit some road blocks. I might look into this again...

Irfanview can capture screenshots in the background while Sage is running. I did it once, I think you just set it to screenshot mode, it minimizes, you start SageTV and then Ctrl+Shift+C or something takes a screenshot and saves it to the HDD.

Sounds interesting Dirk. I'd be interested in it if you get the time.

I'll have to look at irfanview - sounds like something that would work.

By the way I use Snagit on my HTPC and work PC so that would probably do part of what I want to do as well.

Thanks to everyone for your input! The long-term goal is to make the screenshot import into photos and be able to upload the screen-shot to flickr or something like that. I'm always dreaming that way - lots of ideas, but not enough programming skills.....

1) "Shift-print screen"
2) Open MS Paint
3) Ctrl-V paste
4) Use crop tool to draw a box around the screen capture area you want
5) Crtl-X cut to remove the box
6) File/New
7) Ctrl-V paste (puts in just the cut window)
8) Save as (.jpg or whatever)

That's how I do it.

People ask me why I have a shortcut to the old-school Paint program in my quick-launch taskbar... just for that reason. Keeps it handy. I actually use it a lot at work (nothing related to TV, unfortunately)....

The neat part about Irfanview is that you don't have to exit/minimize sage between screenshots.

I've got the screen capture working in SageMC, so expect it to get into the next version...

Hey that's a great idea! I've been using Snagit. But pressing a button on my remote control sure would be convenient!

ALT-Print Screen

ALT-Print Screen

will capture only the current dialog that has focus to the windows clipboard, so there is no need to crop
