Imported media refresh question

Today I watched my media server refresh imported media via samba, and it was quite fascinating to see the entire dialog.. however, it takes about 10 minutes and uses quite a bit of bandwith on the LAN while in progress and I'm wondering if anyone has any details about how this process is controlled.. I am aware that automatic refresh can be enabled and disabled but what I am interested in is anything that would assist me in controlling what gets updated and more importantly WHEN it gets updated. Does anyone have some insight?
