Advice on ethernet over coax

Hi all

I am moving house (well country actually, Singapore to HK)

The house that my wife and I have chosen to rent has no ethernet cabling nor provision to install any (solid walls, hard marble floors, rented).

However it does have cable TV points (and FM arial points) in nearly every room.

Can someone tell me how ethernet over coax works. Can I buy (say) eight ethernet over coax adapters attach a router to one and a PC to the remaining seven and thats it (ie will the ethernet over coax kit work as a switch).

In this configuration (assuming that it works) what would be the real world throughput that I should expect - could I use a central server and 2 or 3 sageTV extenders, this would be SDTV (PAL format).

What brands would people recommend (I've seen reference to dlink, motorola and I've found Gefen and Coaxsys, though I'm not sure that these last are equivalent)

Finally should I use the FM coax connectors or the cable TV connectors (if it matters it's likely a digital cable system).

I have had great results with the NIM-100. It will work as you have described it-I have four set up the same way. If some of the PCs are in the same room, you can just connect them to a switch and then connect one of the bridges to the switch.

I have seen many people report speeds comparable to fast ethernet (80mbit/s). I do not have any sense for how well it handles multiple devices, but I suspect that streaming three or four SDTV sources will not present any problems.

As far as I am aware, the NIM-100 is only available on ebay from liquidators who bought up Verizon's leftover stock.

Regarding the FM/Cable question, as long as it is the same physical medium, you should probably be fine. However, since these devices were specifically designed to coexist with digital cable, it might be safer to use those lines.

I have to agree with fyodor, I was using powerline for a long time and while it ran good it was never quite there. Last weekend I was able to get a couple of the NIM-100s from ebay and they worked great out of the box. I haven't had any problems with the network.

The NIM-100s are made by motorola.
