Questions about my files and properties files

Ok.. I'm being a newbe here.... I'm just starting to play with SageMC after years of the modified default STV.

I'm getting confused about the difference between .my and .properties.

What is the difference between them?
Do either of them have any effect on regular recordings?
I'd like to be able to see Season and epsiode info in the show area.
and what is the difference between EP's mediascaper and BMI by stuckless?

When I add a new dvd to my collection do I save the IMDB info or try to gererate .properties file.. or .my file?

how do my files or properties files get auto generated? (I know I can drag a file onto mediascaper)

I feel kinda stupid asking all these questions... I it might take me days to figure it out on my own.. and my kids (and wife) won't let me be sequested for that long!
