New SystemMessage functionality in 6.5.17

Sage - congrats/thanks on implementing this... I'm sure you'll uncover some great items that will continue to make Sage rock solid (and maybe even uncover issues in 3rd party drivers such as Hauppauge!).

In the release notes, you mention:
Quote:
There is also an icon indicator (blue/yellow/red) which indicates if there's new messages and what their severity is.
Where does this appear? Some more detail would be great. I tried to see what the new SystemMessage screen looks like, but to my "disappointment", I didn't have any and was hoping to see what to expect on this new page.

The sky's the limit with this new functionality. I'm hoping devs such as nielm and others implement this in his web UI plugin! (I already asked him via his thread).

How's about this? The icon in the top right corner (the yellow 'i') is the indicator; this one is in the warning state.

This is great. Thanks so much for this.

You guys might want to give Slugger a nudge with his sagetweet plugin. He is willing to work this in to his plugin if there is enough interest. This would allow email/SMS notification if there is trouble.

I had this same thought, so I opened the "Main Menu -> Help -> User Interface Guide", but the new icons are not documented there yet. Seems like that would be the place to add some info.

Thanks Narflex for the screenshots. Looks great!

Don't mean to hijack a thread, but for those interested in this new SystemMessage functionality, you might be interested in the latest release of my SageTweet plugin. The latest beta build includes the ability to tweet these system messages meaning one can get instant SMS notification of SageTV system messages.

Quick details on the updates here. Download from here.

By the way - thanks to Sage for implementing this feature. Once again it shows that you listen to your customers, such a refreshing change from the competition (aka Microsoft).

Almost immediately after installing this on my main HTPC last night, I had messages about 2 new channels. While the channels weren't that interesting, the info was useful for deciding which other channels to disable as a result.

I hadn't had time to add that info yet when the beta was put out, but it is part of this downloadable STV update:
STV update version 2009060901

Installed the new STV and the help file looks great. Thanks!

(Now if only the System Messages had told me the STV was ready to download, I'd be all set )

This is great! I have had intermittent problems with my HDHR and with the cable-TV drivers not always initializing properly. Now I'll be able to see it and know to chase the problem right away!

Just wanted to add how much I really appreciate this update. This sort of thing really brings the important messages out of the logs and into the UI (and now tweets/SMS thanks to SageTweets) where they are so much more useful.

Thanks!

Just wanted to say I love these new system messages. Found out my HDHR had missed a couple of recordings Fri, Sat and last night. Now I just have to figure out the issue. I grabbed the dshowcapture.dll from another and I am hoping that fixes it.

I hope I don't jinx myself, but I haven't had any system messages generated yet. I tried to create some with the API, but they don't display icons and the message text appears to be a constant value. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I'm generating the message with the following code:
Code:
PostSystemMessage(1202, 0, "Test", null);
Attached Images
File Type: png system messages.png (207.2 KB, 269 views)

Try changing the the '0' to a '1'. That will raise the level of the message and cause the icon to appear. You will just get the static "Test" text in the message with this call. This all worked fine for me with message code 1204
(general message).

Aloha,
Mike

Changing 0 to 1 gave me the icon. The table row in the top says "GENERAL_MSG", I guess I was expecting the ability to put something more user-friendly in there like what Jeff had in his screenshot.

Thanks for the tip.
