Current BKM for Blu-ray containers now that SageTV does Bluray
Folks,
I have been using .mkv containers for all my HD / Blu media. It works great on the externders with stutter free video and AC3 audio. I have now moved to Windows 7 and it doesn't seem happy with .mkv. I am considering using tsmuxer to move to mt2s format. Is that currently the best known method for having media that can be played back on both HD200's and PC's? My priorities are: #1 one container that can be played back on Win 7 media player and HD200 clients with full video and AC3/DTS audio (.mkv seems to fail on the Win 7 native front) #2 All of the above plus...add high resolution audio to above container (e.g. LPCM / FLAC / TrueHD / DTSMA) #3 All of the above plus...chapter support Right now I may be able to get #1 to work on Win 7 with Haali but I am wondering if moving my collection to .mt2s or to a "blu-ray" compliant structure through tsmuxer will give me what I am looking for? thanks, mv |

Gerry,
Thanks for the reply. I saw that, but not sure how that will affect what I am trying to do... My Sage Server runs on a Win 2008 Server x32 box. My clients all run on Win7 x64 boxes or HD200's. For the x64 boxes, does this change mean that I should stay on .mkv, or I should convert to .mt2s (the link references this file extension, but I am not clear if by playing through sageTV on my clients it will be fine with both .mkv and .mt2s)? thanks, mv |

You can try staying on .mkv. Install the patch on your client. Follow the install instructions and see if it works any better.

Stay away from M2TS if you're using 7MC or WMP, anything with VC-1 won't play w/ video.
Right now the best approach for HD audio (IMO) is FLAC in MKV, TrueHD a close second because there are OSS filters that can decode it but the splitter support is somewhat lacking. I mux a FLAC track and an AC-3 track into my MKVs currently. |

This may be a dumb question, and not really on topic, but. . .
If you have an AC3 track, why have an additional FLAC track? -Chris |

Making FLAC the first/default track in the MKV means I get lossless multi-channel audio on the PC.
The HD200 will play FLAC as 2 channel PCM, but stutters sometimes; where it can bitstream AC-3 and decode to 2 channel PCM perfectly. So I switch to the AC-3 track on the HD200. MKV also gets subtitles on both platforms if you embed SRT when it's muxed. Chapter support is coming so those get muxed in too. |

That's good to know.
I know precious little about Blu-Ray standards. . . But that will come in handy when I pop some cash for a drive. Thanks, Chris |

well, you should be able to drag an mkv file onto the batch file and it'll process it.. Personally, I've got dirmon2 set up to run this on any mkv file that doens't have an .edl file. painless, really.
