View video from internet

Newbie question. I have been searching, but not finding the answer to my question.

1st Computer:
Hauppage HDPVR1600
Windows XP Pro SP3
SageTV (server)

2nd Computer:
SageTV Placeshifter

I am able to view TV and recorded content on the 1st and 2nd computer. All appears to be working properly.

Is this something I could confiugre to view from ANY computer via the internet? I assume I would need to open some ports on my router, etc. Is there some documention for this type of configuration?

Any insight appreciated.

I'll guess that both PCs are connected to a router/switch in your house, which placeshifter can deal with automatically. You need to make sure the server can reach the Placeshifter server and write down the locator id so you can put that number into Placeshifter from a remote location. You will also need to setup a userid/password for placeshifter that you will enter once the remote placeshifter connects with your server. Yes, it's all explained in the manual, but who reads the manual unless it doesn't work the way it should the first time? One thing the manual doesn't make real clear is that placeshifter on your local network and placeshifter over the internet are like two different programs...imo

I think I must be missing something. In reading the manual, I'm not following that section to describe how to configure Internet Viewing - or it's just not worded simply enough for me

Both my Sage Media Center computer and my desktop computer are inside the four walls and behind a router.

So from reading the manual I need to re-direct ports 8271[UDP] and 6969[TCP]? From here I just need to install Placeshifter on a computer outside my home network, point it to my IP address (ISP assigned) and presto??

Let's go back a step. Is 'test placeshifter' on the server successful?

I don't have Placeshifter installed on the server. Perhaps that is my error?

Here is my configuration.

Computer 01:
Windows XP Sp3
SageTV
Haupagge TV Card
Hooked to my cable box
Able to record schedule shows and watch

Computer 02:
Windows XP Sp3
SageTv Placeshifter
Able to launch Placeshifter, connect and watched TV and recorded shows

Goal is to put Placeshifter on a computer OUTSIDE my home network and connect over the internet to watch TV or schedule a recording.

Hope this helps! And appreciate all the help.
Kerry

setup>detailed setup>server>

placeshifter server - enabled

then

configure placeshifter internet connection

here you'll find

test placeshifter connection

if this works, you're ready to try connection from a remote computer

I am able to view from from another computer within my home network, but not outside?

I will test from another internet source tomorrow. I am unable to even ping the IP from the internet computer, times out. Thinking possible Firewall issue.

That's correct. It connects automatically on your home network, but you have to 'set it up' to access from outside your network. Just try what I told you and see if it works or not. Then you'll know what you're up against.

See above, I answered yes that (enabled and worked) to your question in the quote.

I will try today from an outside Internet connection.

You overlooked something; the default port that needs to be forwarded is 31099. If your router has uPnP enabled, the Placeshifter Configuration Wizard (which must be run from the server) can do this for you.

Ports 8271 and 6969 are for network encoders (a seperate instance of SageTV server used in a cluster-like configuration).

HTH,
Stu

I think I am close.

I have ran the wizard, and opened port 31099.

I just tried from a computer from the Internet and it attempted to connect, however I need to setup an account. When I get home tonight I'll configure that account.

Aside from VNC, what applications do you guys use to gain remote access to your computers?

I use remote access software. I can use every application except SageTV. For some reason its window is always black on the remote PC. Anyone know how to fix that?

I believe VNC cannot show overlay remotely.
You have to run SageTV in VMR9 mode.

Also VNC won't show you some of the taskbar popups.

All is working properly. Thanks everyone.

As soon as I enabled the proper ports and added an account it worked perfectly.

Perhaps someone can shed some light on this question. I opnly have a single license for Placeshifter, yet I am able to use Placeshifter on a computer within my home and from a computer outside of my home. Is the license for Placeshift only utilized when outside your internal network?

Placeshifter licenses are a per-use licence; they only allow 1 connection per license, regardless of where that connection originates. You can install/run the software from anywhere and connect, assuming that your license is not being used by another connection.

Client, on the other hand, is licensed per machine.

My SageTV runs under Windows Home Server , AKA "WSH". $100 at NewEgg.

Without going into the full song and dance, I'll just say that I can RDP to any PC on my home LAN from anywhere I've tried - including from behind the corporate firewall at work.
