Firmware update gone bad!

I was updating the firmware and it got stuck on the erase phase 9/28. I noticed the activity light still blinked with remote keypresses. I power cycled the unit having a pretty good idea what was going to happen but I saw no other choice. Of course it was dead. I notice that I can hold the delete button while powering the unit on and the activity light still blinks. This suggests to me that the unit has some smarts even with the firmware corrupted. Any chance there is a USB rescue procedure?

I had the same problem today. I updated firmware via the Internet and it hung at 9/28. I left it for a while, the we had a power surge and obviously the unit rebooted. Now it boots to a black screen. I tried the recovery procedure with holding the "delete" key on the remote. When I do that the activity light blinks, but again, black screen. It would appear that the unit is now a brick unless Sage has some way of recovering the image via the USB without booting into the firmware itself.

I've opened a ticket, we'll see what happens.

Read through this post:
http://forums.freytechnologies.com/f...ad.php?t=42960

You can download the bin file from this thread:
http://forums.freytechnologies.com/f...ad.php?t=38677

Then rename the stp200-xxxxxxxxxx.bin to stp200.bin

Yeah I could have but when something breaks in the wee hours of the morning (especially when you just got it), you get frustrated and just want someone to point you in the right direction. Thanks for the help. The server method did the trick.

I think the problem is that if the firmware is hosed the box doesn't have access to USB yet. Their solution is to load firmware via the sage pc software. Be aware this seems to take about 30 minutes. The activity light will blink off and on occasionally during the process. When mine finally finished I got a brief flash of the sage logo on the screen but the unit did not return to HDMI mode. After I saw the logo and the activity light was staying on I finally dared to power cycle the box and then it was back. I have the pc software running on a temp machine. There is no tuner in the box but the software still runs and will still perform the recovery function. I have not even entered my code into it so I AM running the demo and it worked fine.

Helen,
With your recovery procedure: does the Extender have to be hard-wired to the router? Or can a bricked extender remember the network setup?

Mine is hardwired, so I don't know for sure if it'll work non-hardwired. Maybe someone else will.

Maybe you could move the unit to run the recovery process.

Thanks Helen. I'll assume hard-wired (if I ever have to use it). Eliminates a lot of variables anyway. I've been lucky so far. Just updated to 20091007.

regards,
DJ
