Persistent cache on thumbdrive?

My HD100 is not very fast when scrolling through listings that have thumbnails on them.. scrolling through movie posters, channel logos, imdb images etc... turning them all off makes the UI faster, but not very attractive.

I wonder.. is the UI slow in any part due to the lag time involved in getting the images to the extender? If so, would it be possible to make a persistent cache of images on a USB thumbdrive so that the OS didn't have to download them over and over?

If the speed is more an issue with the extender hardware's ability to render the images quickly, then this is probably a pointless idea. Not even sure if you have access to the USB ports in Studio..

I'm just worried that with V7, and whatever GUI improvements it may have, will either not work with the HD100, or not work well.. and it bugs me to have 2 USB ports on that thing and nobody has figured out anything useful to do with them (though I do use it to charge my cell phone)..

unfortunately no you can't do that (although I agree it would be a very useful feature.

What is your option in The inactivity timeout dialog has an option called "User Input Timeout before loading thumbnails" ? I would set it to like 5ms or even 1ms.

Also what is your java heap size?

those are the two most important factors in the performance (other than the hd100 itself being limiting factor)

My Java heap size shows as 282/389/389..

I would up the java heap to around 1gb if you got the ram to spare

the setting is in the customization tab I believe and it called user input timeout or something along that line.

I found those items you mention and made those changes. Do these changes affect only the server? Do I need to change those JVM settings on my placeshifter clients? Do those changes affect the HD100s at all? I never actually watch any content on the SageTV server..

the java heap changes need to be changed on the server and they affect the extenders

the other change needs to be made on the extender to effect it

Can't speak for placeshifter as I don't use it.

They really do need to do something about the slowdowns on the hd100, I LOVE my sage but find the scrolling to be absolutely maddening with slowdowns, yes you can disable alot of the fluff to speed it up, but fluff is what makes Media devices IMO. Monster thumb drives are pretty cheap nowadays, need a way to use them in the USB ports for caching and speed it all up.

My java heap is already set for 1gb, changing the 5ms to 1ms has improved alot though.

Are the 200's any faster?

From what I hear yes the 200's are faster but I don't have one to confirm that.

The 200s are a lot faster and it's noticeable especially for the WAF.

WAF is definitely one of the issues....also when showing off my Sage setup to friends and family the delays in scrolling is very unimpressive as well.

Well if I lived close you you I would pop mine out and bring it by for a quick test run. But I think Charlotte ==> Buffalo may be a bit of a stretch.. Especially since it is winter and you are in Buffalo.

Seriously though I actually didn't think I would like the HD200 much better than the HD100 but was surprised when I hooked it up. My HD200 replaced my HD100 that had a PS capacitor fail. I bought the HD200, RMA'd the HD100 with the intention if it didn't work out I would sell one or the other. I still have both and like both just use the HD200 as a primary and the HD100 on a secondary TV in my office.

You shouldn't be dissatisfied as long as you realize that it is the same functionality just more responsive.
