DVD rips play in VLC but not Sage?
A while back I lost my whs sys drive and had to reinstall from scratch, including moving files off then back onto the shares, as I couldn't get it to do a "server reinstall" correctly. Didn't lose anything, but just noticed that some of my DVD rips won't play anymore within sage. However, if I open the VOB files in VLC, they play fine. Something tells me there's a problem with the other little bitty files that come along with a dvd rip, but that's over my head.
Am I looking at a re-rip here? Not the end of the world, but thought I woud ask before undertaking that.

The only thing I can suggest ti to make sure all the VOB files still exist. I have lost some VOB files and SageTV justs stops the play back when it moves to the next VOB file and it does not exist. So i f the first on is missing then the play back will nefver start.

Are you using the PlaceShifter? Ripped DVD's will not play in PlaceShifter.

No placeshifter. This is happening on HD100s and 200s.
As far as the VOBs, each dvd folder has a bunch of things in it. Movies won;t even start at all within sage, but if I go directly to the folder with VLC, and open the largest VOB files, they play just fine from the beginning. Maybe something happened to the files that hold the dvd menu structure, and sage is unable to open those?

Try using vlc to open the folder
Media/open folder and point it at the rip (Video_TS folder. If the folder is missing files or has been corrupted it won't play. If it OK then it will play just like a DVD disc and you can look elsewhere for your problem. As a work around VOB2Mpeg (freeware) will convert your VOBs to a single mpeg (takes 5 min), but you shouldn't have to do this. BB |

You sure Sage can see them? Are they at exactly the same path?

What are you using to rip the DVDs? I use AnyDVD or DVDFab7, both work. The DVD plays through SageTV just like the DVD player, except for skipping chapters is very quick (music videos have a lot of chapter marks). I playback the ripped DVD with a HD-200.
I used to convert each VOB into a mpeg file with VideoReDo. Then I strung all the VOB segments together with with VideoReDo. That's too much trouble, and you loose the chapter marks. It's better to just rip the DVD, then rename the directory to something that identifies the DVD better than the ripped directory name. What does your directory structure look like from a ripped DVD? I used anydvd and dvdshrink a couple years ago. They all worked fine until I had to rebuild my whs server from the ground up in February, which required me to pull them off the shared pool onto an external drive, then put them back onto the shares again after whs was reinstalled (whs should have been able to maintain the pool through a reinstall, but it didn't and that nightmare is in another thread that I don't care to revisit)
I assume they are at exactly the same path because I just copied/pasted, and some work and some don't. File directopries look like they are supposed to from the sage manual appendix. A thought occurred to me that it might be the full rips that aren't working, and the movie only are fine (I have a little of both). Maybe something could have happened to the extra files that come along with a full rip? If that's the case, maybe I just need to delete everything but the main movie vob and just live without the menus and extra stuff unless I want to re-rip. So there's tonight's homework.

Do they appear in Sage, but just don't playback? Do you get an error in Sage? Have you tried havng SageTV search for media again since all the changes?
I tend to agree that it is probably an issue with Sage not seeing the files correctly after you have to move them around. I would explore that issue and see if you can solve it via the standard "locating files after a reinstallation" methods.

Never did get this fixed, and I'm back on it now.
All video files that are stored on the whs server play fine on networked machines in VLC, so it can't be a permissions thing. Filepaths are UNC, and have been rescanned multiple times The error is 80070057, problem accessing the filesystem for playback on my sage client pc. The extenders (100 and 200) just seem to crash, going to a black screen and requiring a power cycle. I have tried wiping the DVDs directory and restoring a backup, to no effect. Some videos work without issue both on client pc and extender, and there is no difference in the path (all vobs on my DVDs share in individual folders titled by movie name) COuld this have something to do with sage having lost track of video files that could be on two physical hard drives due to WHS' file dupe feature? How can I totally and completely wipe sage's memory of where these files are? Can you clarify what you mean by "locatinf files after a reinstall"? Everything I can find pertaining to that in the FAQ specifies that it doesn't work for DVDs.
