Avatar BD Subtitles

I'm having a problem with the forced subtitles on the Avatar BD.

Disc ripped with AnyDVDHD to Blu-Ray file structure: the subtitles barely appear. Sometimes they flicker on-screen for a fraction of a second. Most of the time nothing appears.

Disc ripped with AnyDVDHD then run through ClownBD to convert the audio to AC-3: the subtitles mostly appear, but some of them are still missed and a few still flicker only briefly. The last subtitle to appear also stays on screen until the next subtitle. In the case of forced subtitles for an occasionally-spoken alien language that can be a long time.

They are also blue, when they are supposed to be yellow.

Anyone else seen this behavior? This is the only disc I have that gives me any subtitle trouble since the patch that enabled forced subtitles. I ended up making an m2ts/srt combination to get it to work at all but I lose the nice Papyrus font that way.

Interesting. I just ran into the exact same problem. AnyDVDHD and TSMuxer/EAC3TO to create my copy for Sage.... Didn't notice if subtitle colour was correct or not.... I gathered from googling that SRT is an option... I just have to try it. Is the SRT muxed back into your movie?

No, I just made an m2ts instead of blu-ray folder and put the srt with identical filename in the same directory. You have to turn them on manually.

I muxed my copy of Avatar in BD folder structure with DTS HD MA and an AC3 track with all english P.Graphics streams. My color seems ok but the text just shows up for a split second except for the last text displayed in each stream, which stays on screen.

I stopped and resumed the movie to clear the text from the screen.

TMT 2 and TMT 3 play the onscreen text as they should.

How has your audio been?

I hope you don't mind me posting my question here, but this is the only Avatar/ClownBD issue thread I have seen...

Have any of you had any audio sync isssues with your converted audio when using ClownBD? When I convert the DTS-HD to AC3, the resultant movie (I target Blu-Ray folder structure) has audio sync issues that get progressively worse the further into the movie I go. It seems like the audio and video are encoded at different speeds. The audio is in sync at the beginning of the movie, but can be off as much as 2-3 seconds by the time I get to 1.5 hours into the movie.

If I play the original AnyDVD HD rip, using the DTS track, all audio is in sync all the way through the movie. I don't know if it matters, but all of my testing is done on the PC so far using Media Player Classic HC. I haven't tried it on the HD200 yet, but I assume if it doesn't work on the PC, it won't work on the extender.

I even tried demuxing the 2 channel Eng AC3 track with the movie and then tsMuxing it together without any audio conversion, and I get the same synch issue. I then tried to use tsMuxeR to demux the DTS track separately, convert it to AC3 in eac3to using the command line, and then mux it together with tsMuxeR and I encountered the same sync issues.

As best as I can tell, I am using the latest versions of ClownBD, eac3to, and tsMuxer.

In all of your work with the subtitles, have any of you guys experienced any audio sync issues?

All,

This may or may not help, but I offer it as a suggestion. What I've recently been doing is using MakeMKV to rip the movie and any subtitles, then I process the resulting file w/ MediaShrink. So far everything works great, but I admit I haven't tried Avatar yet. I'll try tonight and see what I get, but if anyone is home right now and wants to give it a go you'll probably be done by tonight. ;-)

I noticed that myself. I also found an avisynth plugin called SupTitle that works quite well with MeGUI to burn the subtitles into the converted video... unless the movie in question is Avatar. Apparently images used for the subtitles on most movies is pretty much the size of the subtitles themselves and the player is given placing instructions. Works like a charm otherwise. Used the original subtitles from Pan's Labyrinth rather than having to go through the painstaking task of OCR, spell checking, and manual checking to convert them to an SRT.

However, the forced subtitles on Avatar, the ones where Na'vi is being spoken, are actually a full 1920x1080. SupTitle apparently doesn't like this and produces nothing but errors when they are displayed. It is perfectly happy with the rest of the captions though. I suppose they did this so they could guarantee the placement of the text. Oh, and the color is displayed correctly as yellow and not the light blue that the HD200 shows.

I havent yet watched my backup of Avatar. Can someone please give me a time in the movie where subtitles are present. I would like to see if I too will have problems with the subtitles before I sit and watch the whole movie.

I haven't had any sync issues. I have about 20 discs in my library, all of the ripped with AnyDVDHD and sent through ClownBD for AC-3 conversion. I use the HD200 exlusively for playback, so give it a try. Maybe it's just a Media Player Classic thing.

I've had the quick flash of subtitles with ClownBD rips on other movies (haven't tested Avatar yet) - District 9 is the other one that I remember that had this issue.

btl.

Thanks. I will give this a try later today and report back.

I had the quick flash of subtitles with District 9 as well. Also noticed it with Angels and Demons. I have since fixed this problem though.

I just checked my back up and have ran into the same problem. Sometimes the subtitles come up correctly, other times they go away to fast or stay on for a bit. I believe i used the beta update of anydvd hd have others used this version of anydvd?

I used the beta version. The prior NR wouldn't work at all on Avatar for me. (I'm seeing the subtitle issue BTW)

I can try playing from the disc, but AnyDVD will still be in the loop for decryption. I did try DVDFab as well as AnyDVD for the rip, with the same result.

Just tried playing the bluray disc through the hd200. Same results. Hopefully there will be a fix for this soon. Maybe when anydvd hd gets an official (non beta) upgrade??

I just tried using dvdfab as well. Does not seem to fix the problem. However reading their forums people have had this problem as well but were able to fix it by ripping just the main movie. I do not know what they are playing the bluray rip back with but maybee this is a Sagetv issue?
