Two quick questions.

Having read the HD200 manual I can't quite figure out the answer to these:

1. DVD playback using HD200 as a client of the SageTV server. I understand that if I map the drive as an import directory the HD200 can play DVDs that are unencrypted, but does this apply if it's a client, or can the server de-encrypt them first? Also, if I run AnyDVD can I set something up there as a faux drive that auto-decrypts DVDs?

2. I understand that you can connect an external drive directly to the HD200s USB port, but is that available then to the server to store recorded programs. Does it become another network drive, and is there an advantage in doing that other than to just get the drive out of your computer box. (I'm running out of SATA connections, and also want to minimize the heat production inside my box, so was going to use the 0.5 TB drive in an enclosure, connected directly to the HD200.) Will this work OK?

1. A Full client just needs to have a DVD decoder (one that can read encrypted dvd's) installed and you just tell Sage to use that decoder when playing DVD's. There is no need to use anydvd on full clients as long as they have a physical DVD player built in. However, I suppose you could try to use the same process as extenders, but that has the annoyance of having to go to your server whenever you want to play something.

2. No. Hooking hard drives to the HD200 is really only to be used for standalone mode. If it is even available in Extender Mode, it would only be for the HD200 and your server would not be able to access it.

Paul:

I'm missing something. If I use the HD200 as an extender, doesn't it go through the server? Anyway, I can play DVDs mounted on the serving computer from the extender. Whether or not this has to do with AnyDVD I don't know. But it's actually more useful to rip the DVD to a file and then send it back to Netflix. I can then watch the movie at my own leisure and don't have to worry about getting it back. Of course, I don't keep the files once I've watched the movie.

One of the things I haven't quite figured out though is that I can't delete the DVD file from within SageTV. I have to physically delete the file in the file manager. (Now there's a term that brings back memories, huh?)

Sorry I think I see where the confusion lies. You stated is that true for the "client", I thought you were comparing the Extenders vs full clients. You meant Media player vs Extender.

Myself, I rip DVD's using DVDFab but you can do it with AnyDVD. In this case, I just rip them from my laptop and/or desktop (which ever one I am sitting next to) and then transfer them to my server afterwards.

And no, I don't believe you can delete a DVD from within Sage. My recommendation would be just to delete it form the Server and the import scan should get rid of it.

Go to the Videos-DVD\BD and use the Option button on your remote. (Ctrl-O) and go to Menu Options. Choose the Advance Options button and check box the "Allow Video Deletion".

Head over to this thread:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...55&postcount=1

I posted a method in there about using AnyDVD and playing back physical DVD's on extenders ones that are encrypted too ie Netflix.

Thanks, Gerry. I've just been deleting them off the server, but felt like it was a little unkempt.
