Resolution switching when connected as media extender

Can someone explain how the resolution is set when HD300 is connected to a sage server?

Specifically in standalone mode I see the resolution switch based on the source 480i, 720p, 1080p. When connected to the sage server the HD300 always stays at 1080p even when the source coming from the server is basic cable, 480i. HD300 is using Component interface. My concern is w/ settings I should be setting on sage server and the TVs, because some are 16:9 and some are basic 4:3 TVs.

Scenario I'm trying to support:
Server: setup for 4:3 and connected to a std 4:3 tv.
HD300 1: setup for 16:9 HDTV supporting all formats through 1080p.
HD300 2: setup for 4:3 std TV.

Based on what you are stating here, your Sage server is a computer hooked to a tv. This will automatically use whatever resolution you state to output.

With the HD300, you just tell it which resolutions to support (480i, 480P, 720P, etc.) and depending on what resolution the video file is recorded in, it will automatically switch to that resolution (if you want it to, or you can have the HD300 up-convert for you). Of course for your SDTV, you will tell it to output only 480i and it will down convert the video (if an HD resolution) to 480i.

Further, within the Sage interface on the HD300, you can tell it if your tv is a standard or wide screen television.

After setting all the allowable options on the extender while in standalone/media player mode (p. 4 of the HD300 manual), connect to the SageTV server as an extender and configure Detailed Setup -> Multimedia -> Native Output Resolution Switching.
