HD300 bad HDMI cable = no audio?

Just to confirm I'm not crazy.. is it possible to have a bad HDMI cable where audio won't work over it?

I just got two new extenders, and using the cable that came with one of them, I get no audio over HDMI. I tried different inputs on my receiver, both HD audio and bitstream settings in the HD300, and running at both 1080i and 1080p.

Frustrated, I plugged it into my bluray player's cable, and I get sound. I also tried the HDMI cable that came with my other HD300, and it works, and ended up using a spare monoprice cable I had laying around (don't really trust the HD300 cables, and I didn't want to have to rewire behind my system again).

To confirm, I also tried the "faulty" cable once more when I know I had it working - video is fine, but no audio. Switched the cable back (without changing any settings on anything) and I get audio again.

Clearly, there is a problem with this cable.. but I don't really get it. I figured HDMI would be all or nothing, because it's a digital signal. How is sound left out?

Yes a bad HDMI cable can cause no sound.

You have multiple wire and connectors on a HDMI cable, and if just one of them for sound is bad - then you get no sound.

I had the exact same problem. I've only have ever ordered 1 HD300, so of my sample size of 1, it was defective.

I did the exact type of trouble shooting as you, switching to different HDMI cables. I concluded that the supplied SageTV HDMI cables suck (based on sample size of 1). You'll also read of others here with problems with the supplied HDMI cable.
