Why can't i just cancel a recording....

Is it me or is the only way to do it is to set it as watched? If so, why not give the option to just cancel the recording. Most times I'm need to cancel it and I want it to recording next time it's on. Setting it as watched defeats.

Am I wrong?

thanks

Presumably you want to cancel it so you can free up the tuner for something else. Try setting a manual recording on the something else. Manual trumps favorite, and so should cause the favorite to be rescheduled.

Not sure what effect this will have if the favorite has already started recording, but it can't hurt to try.

Well, the question is, why can't we just cancel it. Why hasn't sage just given us a cancel button?

Why do we have to jump through hoops to cancel a recording?

I think they designed sage from the ground up to never need to go into the recording schedule, as it should do everything intelligently behind the scenes. No need to cancel a recording, as the only real reason to free up a tuner is to watch something else. That is covered by the manual recording, and live tv processes. I'm not saying that sagetv shouldn't put one in there, just playing devils advocate as to why what would seem like a basic feature, hasn't been there all along.

I, for one, have never in 6 years needed to cancel a recording. I do feel the 'do you wantto cancel the recording of xxx to watch yyy live? dialog could use some work though (like showing all possible cancel options on one dialog).

If you don't give it something else to do with that tuner, it's going to use it to record your scheduled favorites (or for Intelligent Recording, if you have that enabled). It's not going to leave a tuner sitting idle if there's something useful it could be doing. Why would you want it to? What are you trying to accomplish by canceling, if not to record something else instead? In which case I don't see a problem with telling Sage what you want it to record, instead of getting hung up on what you don't want it to record.

I agree with the OP - you should be able to cancel a recording. I have had many times when I wanted to cancel a recording - perhaps the schedule has changed and your show was pre-empted. Or the episdoe is not as advertised and you have already seen the show, or one of several other reasons. I don't see why you can't just cancel a Favorite?

I'm not sure how I got this option, maybe it's from the Diamond theme or one of the plugins I installed. But that's a favorite and it just started recording, look:

Me too. I've heard all of the arguments but I still want the ability to stop a recording immediately.

+ a bunch for my wife & I. Most of Sage is very user friendly. This part of it is BAD!!!

Does this forum have the ability to do polls? If so might it be worthwhile to start one on this topic and try to get Sage to look at it? I'll bet there is a very high percentage of users that dislike this part of SageTV.

Lightbulb Multi Function Stop

The solution you may be looking for is the UI Modification plug-in "Multi Function Stop" by nielm, JREkiwi.

Yep, I have that installed. This should've been built into SageTV, but at least there's a perfectly good plugin for it.

+1 for me also.

For those that doubt and question the need to cancel a recording all I can say is... uhh... you're kidding, right? I went from a VCR to sage (albeit a few years ago), and all I needed to do was hit STOP....
While we're on the topic, I've done the "set to watched" thing to cancel a current recording but it takes a least 30 seconds to actually stop recording, so it always fakes me out... it should be instantaneous if you ask me - these are computers we're working with after all...

anyway, I've recently switched from v5 to v7 (after a failed effort to upgrade to v6 last year - instability issues) and am really impressed with the stability and the slick interface of v7 thus far... but these "classic" (occasional) sage GUI idiosyncracies still seem to pop up here and there...

+1 for me too, but for a totally different reason.

Every once in a while, I get a "halt" on a recording from an HD-PVR. It usually happens once every 2-3 months. My guess here is that the STB has updated itself, and I loose my serial control etc.

So I have too reboot my pc, then reboot all my stbs, and then wait blindly for like 10 minutes while they sync up. . .

The problem is. . if a favorite (s) are recording at this point when the halt occurs, I can't cancel just that one recording, so it leaves the stupid HD-PVR all locked up, and in turn I can't even get the darn service to stop. I end up having to reboot the PC, and of course the service on startup, starts up before I have even logged in. . . grrr

If i could just tell sage STOP please, then at least at my reboot I would have to keep fighting it. . .

+1 for me too. There are times I come home and see my server is just going nuts recording stuff, and when I go to look at what's being recorded it's got all 4 of my tuners tied up recording shows I've never setup. It's recording suggested shows, and skipping my Favorite shows.

I've resorted to checking my recording schedule, suggestions and such up to 3 times a day just to make sure my SageTV record ONLY what I have told it to record.

Having a simple CANCEL RECORDING button would be awesome.

btw, i played around with the multi-function stop plugin. . .

this does help, but its still not quite good enough. . . what happens is that it converts that one particular recording to a "manual" recording, and then stops it. . .

so, then I do "delete and mark as watched", but of course the favorites manager then kicks in eventually and start recording the favorite (what's left within the hour / half hour).

that 2nd part seems like a bug in sage though. . .or a bug when marking as watched. . .
