client for smart tv or blu-ray player

I might have some interest in tinkering / developing a SageTV client app for a smart tv or smart Blu-ray player.

I visited some friends recently, and even their crap generic Blu-ray player had every major streaming app on it already.

Any obvious development pitfalls here?

The biggest problem based on the posts I've seen for the NextPVR LG and Samsung client is the variation in the firmware and built in mpeg playback form model to model. Newer doesn't mean better but older than 2012 and they are too slow.

I'd think the biggest "problem" is there's so many of those clients to develop for, which ones do you do...

The other problem is I don't know how easy it is to get stuff into the "store" for those. It doesn't seem like they let just any old app in, but maybe that's just a misinterpretation.

Chances are you wouldn't have access to the resources needed to develop this stuff. Most likely, the tv companies develop all of the apps with in house engineer's in order to sell their set.

I dropped various video files on a usb stick and popped it into my Samsung TV (think its a 2012 smart tv model).

* mpeg2-ts video from hd-pvr played fine (w/ dolby 5.1 to receiver)
* high & low bitrate wmv files played fine
* low bitrate mp4 played fine
X high bitrate mkv video ok but audio not decoded

Development for Samsung TV apps seems pretty straightforward, though there is not much info specific for Samsung Blu-Ray players.
