I can't imagine the open source version having free EPG data. Someone has to pay for that data to cover the cost of gathering and distributing it. SageTV made money on software and hardware sales to help cover the cost.

Google does give a lot of stuff away but t is always with the the right to track and use your personal info for advertising. I already have a schedules direct subscription and it is cheap and reliable but I would let Google track my viewing habits for free EPG data. But how they would do that with an open source SageTV makes me think this is unlikely.

I wouldn't presume to know the true answer. However, it would seem to me that the EPG data is probably used in the Google Fiber product to provide schedule data to those customers. Don't know if it's even possible for them to cut off SageTV users while Fiber users still have access.

Considering the relatively small size of the SageTV community I might be bold enough to say that the current number of Google Fiber customers far outnumber those still remaining faithful to SageTV and still using the native EPG.

As others have said, even if SageTV EPG goes away Schedules Direct is a fairly minor cost and from what I understand is able to integrate fairly easily into SageTV.

I'm personally not worried and I've been a SageTV user since 2004.
