Halt detected...or recording "warm up?"

I'm just setting up Docker (Java8, HD PVR, USB UIRT), and wondering if others experience trouble recording HD sources initially upon startup.

That is, when I startup the docker, I can record SD channels no problem. Then I go to HD channels, but see "NO SIGNAL" and note HALT DETECTED error messages in Sage. If I let it go for more than a few minutes (3-15ish), or change to other channels and wait, it seems to work. I presume this is because Sage by default will re-try the source. Then, once it starts recording something in HD, it seems all is normal and I can change channels with normal performance (a few seconds).

I've got Unraid recording to a Pool, and I'm wondering if there is some "buffering" going on. I don't think in at least some cases it's due to spin up of drives, as I was just recording before.

Does anyone else see this sort of thing?

Now that you mention it - I see this as well. I often miss the first 90 seconds or so of recordings. I at first thought that this was just an HD-PVR issue but I think I have also recently seen it with an OTA tuner.

Every now an then I see this as well. Haven't tried to discover a regularity. My recordings are starting 2 minutes earlier and SageTV is recovering in most cases leaving a message video source has to be reset. When switching channels manually this happens from time to time - stopping and trying a second time solves the problem in most cases.

I have continued to see this issue. I just went in and changed the settings for my three data drives so that they never spin down. Hopefully that stops this from happening - but then we may need to recommend to folks that they do this.

For you other folks that are seeing this issue - have you changed your spin down setting from the default?

Are you using a cache drive? I have an SSD as the cache drive, so that is where unRAID will write to when recording, and later at some point the mover will run and shift the recordings over to the spinning disks.

Yes, I do have an SSD set up as a cache drive but I thought that I only have it set up to use for stuff like the /appdata partition. What settings would I check to see if it is being used as a cache for SageTV recordings.

The use of the cache drive is on a per-share basis, so you'd go to the share settings for the share your recordings are on, and in there is a 'Use Cache' setting. Setting it to Yes will cause writes to go to the cache drive, if space is available, and later the Mover will move them elsewhere. Setting it to Only will only store that info on the cache drive (like appdata does). Setting it to Prefer will write to the cache drive, and the mover will only move it off if the cache drive is filling up, and setting it to No will write directly to the array, bypassing the cache drive entirely.

My problems (which got to the point of making Unraid unusable so I've temporarily given up and gone back to Win VM) were associated with writing to a standard disk pool w/no cache drive. Note that the Win VM had no issue doing the same thing.

I'll try the Cache approach this weekend though. Ideally, I'd like not to use the Cache drive - but if it gets it up and running that's what I'll do (and will share results here). Thanks for the tip Fuzzy.

I think you've got some other more significant issues if writing via samba works better than the docker container writing directly to a mount point, and that should probably be tracked down first (since the mover is going to be using the same mount point, and the issues will just come up during mover instead of during recording).

I just checked and my media drive is set to No cache. So I guess I should set it to Yes, correct?

The way I set up my system I have one media share that I use for all types of media - ripped video content, SageTV's recorded TV, photos and music. Would it be a better practice to create a separate share for Recorded TV since that is less static than the other types as you will constantly be adding, and deleting content?

No, I don't see a reason to bother splitting up the media share. I like a cache drive on writing, even if it is more 'static' data like photos and music. Usually, when I'm copying library content to the server, I'm at the desktop doing it, so the added speed of writing to the cache instead of the slower parity protected array is a direct improvement in my time spent. The other benefits to recording to an SSD (especially recording many streams at once, where seek times of spinning drives become an issue) are already mentioned.

I'm about to rebuild my system, and will be using two 120GB SSD's instead of the single 400GB I have now, so that the cache is redundantly protected. Even the 120GB should be plenty for my VMs, dockers, and the temporary holding of recordings and media (I have Mover scheduled to run hourly).

It looks like changing the cache settings did not change anything - I still have this issue.

No idea what to look at without any logging if the 'issue'.

Based on OP description I've seen this too. I switched my HDPVRs to a network encoder VM with a passed through USB 3.0 controller. Many fewer issues this way. I made no other changes to unRAID or the docker.

This happened while recording an NBA game between Toronto and Washington last night at 19:00. When I start watching the file it starts at the 01:14 mark or at 19:01:14 - so the first 1:14 (or 74 seconds) of the recording is bad.

I think one of the key message is around 19:01:12.581 - after it tries again everything is good.
Code:

Setting it to Only will only store that info on the cache drive (like appdata does). Setting it to Prefer will write to the cache drive, and the mover will only move it off if the cache drive is filling up, and setting it to No will write directly to the array, bypassing the cache drive entirely.
I'm having trouble finding the share settings screen. When I select "Shares" at the top, I see my disks and cache and can find the 'sagemedia' folder by selecting the folder icon at the right for Disk 2, so I know that's where my recordings share is located. I don't see a 'Settings' screen when I select Disk 2 (it brings up security settings), nor when clicking on the sagemedia folder (which brings up the file list).

I can see the sagemedia folder on the docker screen, but that acts the same. Selecting 'Settings' at the top and then 'Global Share Settings' doesn't do it.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but it sure isn't apparent to me.

BTW, I don't see any user shares on the 'Shares' screen, and when I select 'add (user) share' I get a blank screen. User shares are enabled under 'Global Share Settings', so I'm wondering if the UI is messed up somehow.

What version of unRAID are you running? This all sounds odd. The list of Disk 1, 2, 3, 4 Parity, and Cache drives is on the Main screen. The Shares screen will show a list of User Shares, and Disk Shares. There should be Compute All and Add Share buttons at the bottom of the User Shares section, and I can't imagine why there would be no shares listed, as some are created by default.

Well, I can see the shares under "Shares" as "Disk Shares", but I don't see any way to access "Share Settings". (I have two disk shares, and one cache). On the main tab I see those, plus the parity drive.

I remember using Firefox as the browser and the Adblock addon caused the unraid webpage to be missing items.
I disabled the addon for the server pages and all was well - could it be something like that happening to you!?
