Shield RF upgrade to different remote due to volume control sensitivity.

I have been using the Shield 2017 for about a year now as a SageTV client. The volume control function is the most annoying thing ever made! The volume changes at the slightest touch of the remote, almost seems like the air movement when your hand is near it changes the volume. I want to flush it down the toilet!!

I have been trying to find a "simple" replacement to use as a TV Remote, not an air mouse etc. I tried the harmony remotes and they were at best, not ready for primetime. The most amazing feature of those was the newest programming software being from a decade ago.

As that newer shield is RF only, has anyone found a tv remote that can control it? I have ordered a few from Amazon and none worked as a remote at all. They all had air mouse in their description. All said they would control a shield, but they appear to mean the older IR version only.

Thanks, Bill

I also did not enjoy (hated is a better description) the Shield's remote. So, based on feedback from others using the Shield as a miniclient, I got the Harmony hub with remote at $62 on Amazon. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
It uses Bluetooth to connect with Shield. I can't recall exactly how to get it all setup (assigning buttons); but it's not that difficult and searching this forum would help with that.

I also bought one of these. I liked it so much I bought two more for two other rooms. I love the simplicity of the remote.

Eureka a Remote that works with my Shield 2017

After many months of trial and poor results I have found a remote that works like I expect a remote should with my Shield 2017 Android Box!! And no programing either, it worked right out of the box. Funny thing, it even turns on my Sony TV... That was unexpected, but nice. Now I just need to figure out why my Shield doesn't like to wake up from its remote or the new one after its either shuts off or goes to sleep. That's been happening for about 6 months now, maybe it was an android update. Usually I need to power cycle it. I will have to research that now that I have a decent remote.

And it's only $15.99

https://amzn.to/2Qb17OW

I think I died and went to heaven! It's definitely not hell, I was there every time I picked up the OEM shield 2017 remote and the volume either went sky high or inaudible totally crapping on the WAF.

I've tried the G20, the Logitech Companion + Hub and a Logitech 665 with a Flirc. All 3 are better than the included Shield remotes for 2015 and 2017, but here's the issue with each:
(1) Logitech 650/665 and Flirc - overall pretty great but a bit laggy as it is IR only but the only backlit solution listed here
(2) G20 - good but does not seem to control volume except via CEC - also no backlight; limited buttons
(3) Logitech Hub/Companion - responsive remote but no backlight, can also use smartphone but physical remote preferred - also dedicated home control buttons cannot be assigned to any function

(1) and (3) can assign a lot of buttons to get good SageTV functionality like record, stop, play, pause, ffwd, rewind, menu, ch+, ch-, etc.
(3) can use a built-in keyboard device such that keyboard commands for SageTV can be assigned to buttons; (3) also does no require the remote to be aimed at an IR target as it uses a hub

If you are interested in the FireTV 4K as a client, solution (3) works, but it does not work well with the (1) Flirc solution - no long press support. In my testing, the FireTV 4K could be a better client than the Shield as it does not exhibit some issues with A-V sync that can occur with the Shield+Miniclient+Exoplayer.

I wish Logitech would develop a lower cost backlit remote that works with bluetooth and IR and the hub and let me program ALL of the buttons...

Nvidea updated the Shield this month. There is a new dongle version for $150 and a new Pro version for about $199. (Dongle version - https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-Shield...3591023&sr=8-7)

As part of this update, they re-engineered the remote control. The volume control now has normal buttons. It has both RF for the Shield and also an IR blaster to control other components like the TV. The new remotes are suppose to work with the older Shield TV versions.

I believe the remote is suppose to be available as a stand alone purchase ($29.99), but I did not see any on Amazon when I just checked. I guess it hasn't been released yet.

Yup, apparently you can sign up for notifications on the Nvidia site. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/...uG6t_8T0iolR5g

My G20 works with the volume on my 2017 Shield.

I have not found any issues using yet!. Maybe its a newer version than what you tried? Back-lighting would be cool, but not really a requirement on a remote with as few buttons as this one. -Bill
