transcode HD to mvp with p4 3.0E HT processor

anyone in here have a setup similar to this that is able to transcode HD programming to an MVP without stutter (or with very minimal stutter at least)?

i currently have a p4 2.66 with a 533 bus and it can't transcode HD to save its life. you can get the prescott's in 3ghz for pretty cheap at newegg and they o/c easily to the 3.2 - 3.6ghz range but i just wanted to know if changing the chip was even going to get me close?

i'll stick with what i have and wait for the HD extender if not.

thanks.

I 've got a 2.8 prescott oced to 3.06 and some stutters are still there.

I haven't tried ocing to 3.6 but I think it would probably be OK judging from the difference observed when going from 2.8 to 3.06.

I believe that an upgrade in the mobo and CPU is in order.....

This is a known problem with version 6.0. Version 6.1 beta should be released anytime within the next week or so according to this thread http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23024 and George of Sage Support says that it should fix the HD stuttering (transcoding) when played on the MVP. My video conversions in Sage also stutter badly from the transcoding.

I can not wait for 6.1!!!

dmiracle - i read when you posted that in the other thread but i have a feeling that is more specific to your case since you have a very powerful processor that isn't currently being properly utilised?

i'd like to hope that it's an accross the board fix but rather i think the fix is just to allow both cores of your cpu to handle the transcode.

i only have a single core cpu and my mobo is only socket 478 so i'm pretty limited to what i can do.

**lucas - that's good news and pretty much the info i was looking for. i don't have a need to watch too much hd at the mvp end right now but those odd occasions when i do want to i'm stuck so i think i can feel ok with making a jump to a 3 gig pressy. wish i could get a similar price on a 3.4ghz pressy though

well life should be good for dmiracle today!

sadly though 6.1..3 doesn't help weaker chips as my 2.66 still can't transcode hd. it did help some though just not enough.

When I play a 1080i HD program on my MVP, it consumes around 95% of my Athlon64 3500+.

Same problem with a AMD64 2800. Stutter, stutter, stutter. The bad thing is if I try and convert an HD file to DVD Standard, it stutters just like if I was trying to transcode live to an MVP. With 5.04 I could transcode HD with no problems but cannot transcode any HD with any flavor of 6. When I have time I will file a bug report.

jlabrue-

Not trying to rub it in, just letting you know that with 6.1.3 I am able to convert HD recordings to standard DVD with no problems. I have an AMD XP 2100+. It takes somewhere around 3ish hours to convert an hour of HD. While not mathematically pure, I assume I need a processor around 3 times more powerful to transcode on the f ly with no stutters.

I have the Venice core (socket 393) and it is running stock (2.2 GHz). I ordered the parts on September 19, 2005. fortunately, NewEgg keeps all of the order information so I could look it up! I am running XP Pro and have 1GB of RAM, if that would make a difference.

The HD program that I was playing back was a 1080i program from PBS. I was not watching it live, either.

thanks, fidget.

just picked myself up a northwood 3.2ghz. toms hardware cpu charts shows that it just slightly outperforms your venice core 3500 so i'm hoping that should put me over the hump since my other components / OS are the same as yours.

No problems. People were jealous of me on 5.x when I had it working and they didn't I'm going to do a little more tweaking. The files I attempted to trancode and convert were on a storage box and not the Sage server directly. I tried copying a couple of problem files to the local drive of the server to see if this resolves anything.

I'm not too concerned about on the fly transcoding to the MVP with this box since I know it is not the fastest now. I would like to get reliable conversion though so I will try and get some log info for a bug report.
