CableCard PC

Any news on the (un)successful status of CableCards for media center PC's? Understanding the whole CableLabs certification, have any of the certified media centers really been purchased and used successfully out there?

There are a few out there you can buy now but they are very pricey. You are talking about $2,000 grand for the base model without CableCard and then $500 for 1 CableCard or $1,000 for two. I'm sure you can Google where to buy them but off the top of my head I can not remember who sells them.

I know this isn't what you're asking for, but I just wanted you to know people are having much better luck with R5000's and SageTV. Plus, you dont have the limitations of Cablecard technology. Just do a search on our forums for "R5000" for more information.

Thanks, mkanet. I'm aware of the R5000's, but am still aware of the issues with Dish Network's h.264 streams. I refuse to upgrade my client or server to Vista at this point.

I didn't figure the CableCard solutions had taken off yet, but I was just curious in general. I'm still bummed that I can't get NESN in HD into SageTV from cable, or from satellite either (Dish doesn't carry the HD feed).

For now, I just keep a crappy digital STB for when I want to watch a RedSox game....

Hmmm... Im curious what does Dish Network's h.264 streams have to do with cableTV? Cablecards arent meant for Dish Network. R5000s are ideal for cable since there's much less hardware/software requirements for mpeg2 and more compatibility.

I suppose I see your point now... to buy a cable box to be mod'ed. I never really thought too much about that. I guess I'd have to find a cable box that Comcrap would provision......
