MVP + Vista + SP1 Beta = Good News!
Good news! Prior to SP1, the MVP would freeze while skipping, often requiring me to reboot it. Very annoying. Post SP1, the MVP acts exactly like it did when I was running SageTV on XP. The MVP skips perfectly every time all the time. I can skip it all around in ways I *knew* would lock it up before and it doesn't lock up. As a bonus, those improvements in SageTV 6.3 have it skip most shows in a way that doesn't have those blocky artifacts, which is really sweet.
Since I only use the Vista box for SageTV, I cannot tell you anything else about SP1 or how unstable the other parts of the Beta release are. All I can say is whatever they fixed, it makes the MVP work flawlessly. Good on Microsoft and good on SageTV! Vital "stats":

That's really good news! I'm still planning on keeping my MVPs and I use Vista. I'm planning on waiting until SP1 ships as is should be pretty soon now.

I haven't had as much luck with SP1. Although SP1 update didn't advertise itself as SP1 in Vista just a rather large update(is this correct?). I can say that MVP is better, but I'm still able to crash it.

You should see Service Pack 1 in your system information. You should also see in the lower right corner of the screen it says evaluation copy. I use the HD extender now but I do still see the issue. It is not nearly as bad as before SP1, but are still problems. I have run s long as 6 days without seeing it.

UPDATE: I didn't have SP1 installed as I previously thought, and I did test the MVP last night after installing SP1 and it does in fact work MUCH better. I still find it a bit more sluggish in responding to commands than when I had the server on XP, but it didn't crash and is definitely usable.

Yup. The SP1 installer is clearly "beta quality". You really have to follow their instructions to get it working--when they say "wait 15 minutes before refreshing windows update", you wait 15 minutes :-) I'll confirm what has been said, you'll know it is installed because you'll see an "evaluation copy" or something similar on the bottom right of your desktop.
The MVP has not locked up once since the last time I posted. |
