How To Update STV

This must be covered elsewhere, but searching for 10 minutes did not find it.

When upgrading to a new version of STV, does one just install the new version on top of the old? I had some funky behavior from release candidate 6.4.6 when I did that, but maybe it just wasn't a stable release.

What do you mean "update an STV"? If you mean going back to the original default that is never touched by importing plugins. It should be as easy as choosing SageTV3.xml. If you mean you think there is something wrong then you can usually download the standard one for the latest version from the downloads forum. If you mean when a new deault one is released you go into Detaled Setup-Advanced-Check for STV update. That is only available with the latest version and you must use the default STV with no plugins. You cannot use SageMC yet.

He means "upgrade to a new version of SageTV". The answer is to install over top of your existing setup in order to preserve recordings, favorites, and configuration settings.

"STV" around here means a loadable UI replacement, not the software itself, which we generally call Sage or SageTV. The stock UI does include a feature to download and install UI updates (i.e. an updated STV), which is causing some confusion here.

Yes-sorry for the confusion. Always back your existing SageTV directory somewhere and then perform the upgrade. If it seems to behave "funky" make sure you kept your backup, uninstall SageTV and delete the directory. Install the new version and configure your tuners and make sure everything works. You won't see your previous recordings or favorites yet but don't worry. After you are sure it is working shut Sage down and copy your wiz.bin file that you have in your backup folder. Now start Sage up and all of your previous recordings and favorites should be there.

BTW, there is a topic in the beta forum that covers all the steps for anyone unsure how to safely back up everything before proceeding: How to install a new version of SageTV. There's a FAQ too & those posts point to each other.
