Leo Laporte

Being geeky, I often listen to Leo Laporte's radio show. Often, people call in and ask about PC-based DVRs. Leo doesn't mention Sage; maybe he doesn't know about it.

Patrick Norton made a very brief mention of SageTV in a semi-recent episode of SYSTM. If was very frustrating because they had an entire episode dedicated to MythTV and another to Windows Media Center. In both episodes Patrick had a Hauppauge HD-PVR box sitting on the counter and for both Myth and WMC they said it would not currently work with those platforms. Well despite my yelling and screaming at the screen, they never made mention that the HD-PVR was already supported in SageTV

Even the geekiest pc "experts" in the media (PC Mag, Extreme Tech, etc...) seem to only have very basic knowledge of HTPCs. I guess you can't be too surprised...overall "we're" still a minority. It too drives me nuts when I listen/watch podcasts and hear mis-information. Many times I almost emailed DLTV/Tekzilla and offered to ship my box out there

Sage should get on Leo's website or during a broadcast, his chat room, and make themselves known!

His audience is prime pickins.

Maybe an ad or two - his show is probably cheap.

I've listened to hundreds of Leo LaPorte's programs and I cannot remember SageTV being mentioned once. Leo wrote a book called "Leo Laporte's Guide to TiVo". The book has details about how Tivo works and how to hack it. So Leo might have financial reasons never to mention SageTV. Here is a link to information about the book: http://dvr.about.com/od/tivo/gr/gr3.htm

I've seen SageTV very briefly on the DL.TV.

It's too bad that the technology shows only seem to think Tivo or a DVR is the only device that can replace the VCR, especially when SageTV simply blows away Tivo.

last weekend Leo spoke with a caller asking about how to do HD DVR - and Leo mentioned Hauppauge and another HD tuner for PCs and the software that comes with these. No mention of TiVo (or Sage).

Seems like Leo just doesn't know.

It's really hard to contact Leo LaPorte. You used to be able to send him e-mail if you filled out a web form and it verified your identity (to reduce spam). He dropped that about a year ago, but I haven't checked much to find out if there is a way to contact him, other than not seeing a link on his web page, www.leo.am (not .com). Other people that Leo talks to like John C. Dvorak from Cranky Geeks usually mention that Leo does not read any e-mail or it is hard for them to contact Leo.

You can try calling into the Saturday - Sunday show, but you will have to probably wait for one hour on hold, but once you get through the queue, you will be able to talk to Leo. There is a chatroom that is going on during the radio show, but I don't think Leo is always looking at the screen during the show.

Another way that might work, I think would be to mail a surface letter to his studio address. However that might not get to him either.

So, I think the best way would be to call in the radio show, which is 2 PM - 5 PM EDT. Here is a link to the radio show: http://techguylabs.com/radio/Profiles/LeoLaporte

Slightly off topic........

How's Hauppauge supposed to be pronounced? On that video it sounded like 'howpog' - over here I always pronounce it more like 'howpidge'

then theres 'A'sus or is it Asuse? and router..........

Maybe I just can't speak my own language properly.

As for the frist clip it just show how dumb they really are when they had WinTV-PVR PCI after all it was Hardware MPEG2 Encoder and they was using WinTVCap which didn't work on Hardware MPEG2 Encoder which by the way was the wrong app anyway they should been using WinTV2000 or even WinTV32.
As for Leo LaPorte he has mention SageTV ocen that I know of.

Wow, that's a little unfair... that clip has to be at least 5 years old. How many of the people on this forum had a clue back then. Of course they were presenting themselves as experts.

Leo actually interviewed Jeff Kardatzke four years ago about SageTV at CES.

My first tuner card was an ATI All In Wonder Value card. I purchased it because it was recommended on Screen Savers. Spent 4 to 5 months trying to get the software recording card to work. About ready to give up on PVR when I decided to purchase a Hauppauge 250. Never look back. That was the moment I stopped trusting others.
