sage tv server and mvp client on the same box
I am contemplating building a system. My original plan was to use an HD Theater to connect to our main television, however; I want to be able to browse the net or remote into other machines. Thus I am shifting to spending the money on a better video card with HDMI out and connecting that directly to the television.
Has any one run the server and client on the same machine? Were you happy with the results? Looking at an ATI Radeon for display. |

A single PC connected directly to a TV, with recording engine and UI running on the same box, is the normal, entry-level configuration of SageTV. Lots of new users run it that way before they ever expand to multiple clients. My own server is connected directly to a TV, and it works fine that way.
I'm confused though by your reference to running "sage tv server and mvp client on the same box". The MVP is a hardware extender, not a software client. The software client is called SageTV Client, but you don't need it to run a UI on your server. The SageTV Media Center software (the server software) comes with a UI built in.

thanks! I thought the server software came with a client but got confused when looking at the prices of the software.

The "server" software also runs as a client. You can either run it in standalone mode or as a service. In standalone mode it's just like any other program and can be minimized to the system tray when the interface isn't active. As a service it runs completely in the background and the interface runs as a client. But you aren't required to purchase a separate client license to run both server and client on a single PC. The SageTV Client license is only required if you plan on using a separate PC from the server to view SageTV recordings.
