Question Guidelines for STV/STVi programming for Extenders?

Hi,

I've been working on improving fan art support and performance in SageMC. At this point, performance is very good on the client computer that I use for development. The problem is that when I try it out on my HD200 it seems like everything I do to try to improve performance seems to instead slow it down.

A number of the things we have attempted involve the use of java methods. For instance in the latest iteration, a java method was written to scale down background images to the UI resolution and then cache them in a local folder so that the scaling only has to be performed once. The method then returns a sage metaImage object. This seemed to speed things up on my client computer, but it seemed to bog down the HD200 even more.
So my questions are:
  • Are there any guidelines or best practices for keeping the UI responsive on extenders?
  • Is there information available describing what processing is actually done on the extender vs. on the server?
  • Would performance limitations be centered more around disk IO, image processing (scaling), or rendering?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Aloha,
Mike

I'm not sure what to say other than suggest a couple things to check:

How many animation layers are in use? Too many layers could cause performance issues. The default STV limits itself to using 3 layers. A couple more might not hurt the HD200, but beyond that... ?

Check the log to see what is happening -- does the log indicate repeated attempts to reload the image and/or clear the cache to make more room to load something? Checking the log to see what is happening with memory would probably be the most important thing you could check.

I keep SageMC limited to 3 layers as well.

I'll definitely look at this. Thanks.
