How can I get this to work?
I have my WHS running SageTv – great, I also have two clients whom can access the server (they are Hauppauge MediaMVPs) excellent.
But I have an external cable tuner (Virgin) where I get the Sky stuff, I have setup an external network encoder – I can get it to download the Digiguide into SageTV on the WHS however, how do get it change channels on the network encoder? I have tried various methods has anyone else done this or got it to work – I have USBIRT attached to my network encoder. Great system, even though sometimes a little complicated. The Hauppague PVRs should be attached to your WHS. The external cable box outputs should connect to one of the the Hauppauge PVR inputs. The USB-UIRT should be installed on your WHS and configured to change channels on your external cable box. I don't see a reason to have a network encoder setup.

Ah but
Ah, but what happens if the cable box is in one room and the WHS is an other. The WHS is the server so is somewhere else and the network encoder is by the external tuner (also the WHS doesnt have enough procesing power to encode analogue)
Thanks for your reply |

Your tuners are hardware encoders and will use close to 0% cpu on your server. It may be worthwhile to locate the cable box.
In regards to your setup the USB-UIRT should be setup on the encoder and configured for an eternal set top box. And you will have to learn your set top box remote to the USB-UIRT. Descriptions of encoder box, OS, etc will certainly help for recommendations and how you have set up the USB-UIRT so far. Gerry

I'll put in another vote for just moving the cable box. It makes much more sense to have the cable box at the server. Is MUCH smoother and easier than trying to get a reliable network encoder setup going.
Also, how about some more description on the hardware you are working with? What are you trying to use for your 'External Network Encoder'?
