Placeshifter locator problems...
I recently had to reinstall SageTV and now my placeshifter wont work. I have re-entered my license and Sage shows I have 2 valid licenses (1 media extender, 1 placeshifter). When I try to test the connection I get "The locator server could not connect the IP Address registered for this locator ID"
I verfied my port is open externally on 31099. I tested this by attempting to telnet to xxx.xxx.xxxx 31099 from a command prompt in windows. Had the port not been open, I would have gotten an error. Even though I'm not running telnet, it simply tells me whether anything is listening there. I use this trick all the time at work. I've checked my port settings a million times and it works locally over my LAN. What am I missing here? Last edited by djseto; 07-23-2009 at 07:06 PM. |

Couple of thoughts:
1. Verify your external IP address by visiting http://IPchicken.com . Using that IP address, try connecting from outside your network (don't use the locator ID, use the IP address). 2. If that doesn't work, then your router is not forwarding the port correctly. If that does work, then you may want to make sure your internal IP address is the same as it was prior to your router going out, and then try connecting with the locator id again. HTH, Stu |

If I enter my external IP address and connect directly, it works so clearly the problem is not with my ports. When I installed my new router, I set static IP addresses for all my machines. Based on the above test, it's working. Is there a way "re-register" my locator ID with the locator server? I would assume it would do this automatically as that's the point of having a locator ID and not relying on IP addresses. I'm stumped

I just sniffed the packets using a very expensive piece of network packet analysis software that my employer makes and sells. I can see the TCP handshake happening between my PC and admin.freytechnologies.com. After the initial TCP handshake, my machine waits about 3.5 seconds for a reply from admin.frey. There is clearly open communication going on here. I'm not seeing a failed connection. I'm DEFINITELY getting outbound and inbound communication.
I just upgraded to 6.6 and that didn't fix anything. Last edited by djseto; 07-24-2009 at 11:05 PM. |

Sounds like it's time for a support request to Sage:
http://www.sagetv.com/request.html You've verified that it works from outside your network with the external IP address, so you've narrowed it down to the locator ID. I can't think of a way to "reset" that ID, but they'll probably have more ideas. They'll also probably want your logs, so here's a post that shows you how to get them. http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...8&postcount=10 Do us a favor, though; if they solve it for you, please post back and explain what the solution was. May save somebody else some trouble in the future. Stu |

After working with support through a variety of things, we ended up deleting the placeshiftter key files to force a new locator ID and that seemed to fix it. I never heard back from support about what their theory behind what caused this was.
