SageTV Media Server & Snow Leopard

Ok, just some preliminary playing around here with trial version on Mac with new Snow Leopard installed. The good news here is that Snow Leopard now runs 32bit Java 1.6.0_15! This is great news for those of us that run the mac version, as it now means that we can use most of the plugins such as SageMC without the compatibility problems that plagued us when we were stuck with Java 1.5.

Currently I have my SageTV Mac server running on an old PowerMac G5 running Leopard Server 10.5. I was able to install SageMC on it (with the Java 1.5 compiled JARS), and it runs ok, but when I tried to run other Java apps such as importing DVD Profiler info, it would not work correctly. This is because this app is I believe compiled in Java 1.6. Now, when I run this same set up on a Snow Leopard Mac (note also that when running SageMC on Snow Leopard, the DEFAULT Java 1.6 Jars *DO* work), everything works well!

Unfortunately this means I will have to upgrade some of my older hardware to the newer C2D intel macs, but at least now we should be on a somewhat level playing field with the PC and Linux crowd when it comes to customizations.

SageTV Media Server & Snow Leopard - not perfect

This is my 1st post ....

OK, I have a Mac Mini 1.83 Core 2 Duo, that I am using to run SAGETV Media Server (6.6.1). There are also 2 HD200 extenders. All worked perfect until I upgraded OS X from 10.5 to 10.6.

Here are the issues:

- On the server, connected to the 720p LCD via HDMI, when I launch SAGETV it prompts me to install SW/updates each time I launch the SW. Also, I have to upgrade the SW version each time I launch the SW.

- On the HD200s connected to the 720p LCD via HDMI, some of the graphics are displayed with jagged edges or seemingly in a low resolution. These are the different logos such as the menu scroll bar, the sagetv logo, the spinning circle while it is working, and my channel logos. NOTE: This specific issue is NOT present from the SW running off the Server.

Everything else seems to be working quite well.

Any suggestions on how to address these issues are welcome.

the reports of nothing but issues with the 10.6 upgrade have convinced me to stay with 10.5 for now.

has anyone submitted bugs to Sage tech support?

I reported this as a problem this weekend and got this response today:

We don't support Snow Leopard at this time. We are working on fixing the
issues with it.

Snow Leopard installed just today. Silly me - without reading the forums first. I'm running the latest SageTV ver 6.6.1 for OSX. Sage worked flawlessly for many months (mad props), but now plays back my recorded shows at approx 4x or even 8x normal speed. This is true for shows recorded in 10.5 as well as Snow Leopard. Also, Front Row and iTunes open on my desktop while I am trying to navigate Sage with my Apple or Harmony remote. Really don't want to roll back to Leopard.

Something else unrelated, but after installing SL, my SageMC font looks like it was sent back to 6th grade. It's a little simpler, heavier, and not smart and sophisticated like I enjoyed before.

Just reporting what I see. Hopefully it's helpful.

I just installed Sage on a 2009 mini with Snow Leopard(10.6.1). Sage works good, except if I have to relaunch it, it has to reinstall the components as if it's the first time it's being launched. Settings remain, so this is a minor annoyance, as I shouldn't have to relaunch often. Just thought I'd mention it in case there is a fix.

Sorry I won't be much help as a Snow Leopard/SageTV bug-reporting guinea pig anymore. I couldn't stand not having my smoothly functioning SageTV that I have come to appreciate, so I rolled back to Leopard 10.5 (btw - Plex is also crippled by 10.6). It was a minor pain-in-the-butt restoring all of my preferences for other apps, but most of SageTV user data is stored in the app package and application support folder, so it all came back perfectly, including the nice screen font for SageMC.

**UPDATE - Now almost a year later, I upgraded my Mac Mini, did a fresh install of the latest SageTV and a fresh install of SageMC over Snow Leopard, and everything works perfectly. The only issue now is that some of the commercial audio is much louder than the program. I have to make sure I have my finger prepared on the mute button. Am I mistaken, or didn't one of the Phoenix iterations fix that issue?

Although I have pretty much given up on SageTV+Snow Leopard due to the garbled graphics on placeshifter AND media extenders (which was actually the deal breaker for me), I did figure out the solution to this annoying issue:

When SageTV Mac is installed on Leopard OS, it installs the following file: Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts/SageTVServer.pkg

If you go to this same directory on a Snow Leopard install, ie Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts, then you will notice that there is NO "SageTVServer.pkg" file there. For some reason SageTV looks for this file I think, and if it isn't thre, you end up having to reinstall each time it is run. To fix, I simply copied it from a Leopard install, and from then on no more annoying prompt to reinstall in Snow Leopard. At first I was all excited, and was hopeful that this deficiency might help with the garbled text, but unfortunately it did not...

Thanks for your reply. This is one of many issues I've had with Sage lately. Here's to hoping there's a new version on the horizon

No-there are still issues--but they were moved over to the beta forums...

But there hasn't been much traffic there, either, since the posting of the last fix. Most of the troubles seem to be related to the HD200 more than to the Sage server.

Are there still issues running Sage on OS X 10.6 and HD200's?
