I've tried and tried and just can't get this to work...

I've been using the media center software for a few months and have installed the client program and have been pleased...But the placeshifter is causing me big problems that I just can't figure out...

I've opened 31099 & 8018 (which placeshifter says it needs)...I've established a "fixed" ip for the server and every other time I run the test on the server it says it can't connect the locator registered with the ip...But the automatic upnp says all is well...Now I could reboot and that test will say everything is fine...but clearly something is wrong...

On the client side I've never gotten it to connect...I've tried the "real" ip and every other ip I've come across in the router, along with the locator ID...I've tried from within the network and outside...I've disabled all firewalls...The errors either say that outbound for 8018 needs to be opened (which I've checked that port and it is) or that the media center side is not right and to run the test...Which will come back fine...

I'm on AT&T DSL with a Motorola Modem 2210 http://www.shopsbc.com/catalog/produ...=2210-02-1002K

and wireless router D-Link DIR-625
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=501

Part of my difficulties was getting the ports opened...Which now they are but I had to forward them on both the modem and router...I've read about the 2 router issue with AT&T sometimes...But the specs just call it a modem...I don't know...but I'd REALLY like to get this working...

See attachments...

Thanks in advance...

Jeff

hmmm...

So it seems that I don't have to have the ports forwarded on the router to have them open...But I do have to have them opened on the "modem"...The opposite doesn't work...

It appears that you are running two sub nets. I never had DSL, but typically you simply connect the modem to the WAN port of the router, then on the router you chose the subnet and open the ports and forward them.

You don't need two layers of routing. My advice would be to put the modem into bridging mode and set up PPPoE on your router. On some modems this is called "computer does login" or words to that effect (as opposed to "modem does login").

None of that however should interfere with your ability to run Placeshifter locally, using the LAN IP address of your Sage server. So your first step should be to try to get that working to verify that the server and client have the necessary ports open in their firewalls. Once that's up, then you can add port forwarding and Internet routing to the mix. That way you'll be debugging just one thing at a time, so it will be more obvious where any problems originate.

So...to make it more interesting...Now when I open the Sage client (not placeshifter) I get no picture...Or a green screen depending on the channel...I get audio...I've never had an issue with this program...

Is there a conflict just having both of these installed on a single system?

SageTV Client and Placeshifter can happily coexist on the same machine.

Looks like you have two routers on the same network. You have two choices, either:

1) Set the DSL modem/router to bridge mode and disable its DHCP. And then use the D-Link to handle PPPoE and the routing.

2) Disable the D-Link's DHCP and use it as a hub/switch, both wired and wirelessly.

so...

I think the "disable DHCP on the router" will be easier for me as I'm not even sure I remember my password for the pppoe setup...

Do I still plug the ethernet cable into the same port if I do that or do I go from the modem/router to my newly created switch's LAN port instead? I would assume that would bypass the router settings?

I appreciate the help guys...

Jeff

Still no dice...

Actually remembered the pppoe setup info and switch modem to bridge mode...there was a bridge/router mode but I went with straight bridge...

Got the router all set up and got on the web...Ensured that the ports were opened and that sagetv server was happy in the cofiguration...Double checked the locator id number...& no dice...

Does Placeshifter work locally, using your Sage server's LAN IP address? Don't worry about the locator ID yet; just focus on getting server and client to talk to each other over the LAN. Once that works, then you can try routing it over the Internet.

nope...

The error message I get is to go through the configuration wiz on the SageTV Media Center and test the connection...So I go to the media center and the connection test is always successful and states that I should be able to connect externally...

I've never had an issue connecting with the client...

I just don't know...

this is a long shot...but the media center I'm using is 6.5.9 and the placeshifter is 6.6...should that matter? If I should update just for troubles shooting purposes will I loose all my setup if I uninstall and reinstall...?

Thanks again all...
Jeff

I updated everything...

All at 6.6...turned all the firewalls off...confirmed the placeshifter config in the media center and ensured that it was happy and tested it...I've tried to use the locator, and the network ip and the ip ip...nothing...Same errors...either do the confirm the config in media center or port 8018...

ugh...

I noticed that the ethernet light was flashing on my modem...Cycled the power and my networked popped right up on placeshifter!!! It just locked up and crashed while I was writing this but it did show up....I'll play with getting on from outside now...

thanks all!!

k,

Begin with some basic network testing; inside your network, can you:

1. Ping the Sage server from the pc with placeshifter installed?
2. Access a shared drive on the Sage server?

If you can do all of that, then you should be able to use Placeshifter inside your network; if that's not working, then it's a network configuration issue. Post back once you've verified you've been able to do that.
