Sage TV license and different machines
My trial is about to expire and I am about to purchase SageTV.
My PC runs Windows XP Media Center Editions, SP3. It's barely fast and beefy enough to run this and all my other apps. Soon I'd like to buy another faster PC and have that be my HTPC. Questions: 1. is it possible to uninstall SageTV from my current PC and install on the new PC if it's also running Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3 ? 2. is it possible to uninstall SageTV from my current PC and install on the new PC if it's instead running Windows XP Professional, SP3? 3. is it possible to uninstall SageTV from my current PC and install on the new PC if it's instead running Windows Vista ? I just don't want to be a situaiton where I have to buy this program twice in short period of time just because I want to move it to a faster PC. Thanks, Robert current: Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe AMD Athon 64x2 4400+ 3GB RAM 12TB HD space(mix of 7.2 + 10K rpm;all SATA) GeForce Nvidia 6800GS 256MB Hauppage WINTV-HVR-2250(8891) driver ver: 7.6.27.27223 slot = PCIe x4 |

A SageTV license for Windows is good on any version of Windows. The earlier question was in regards to completely different operating systems; i.e.: Windows vs. Mac vs Linux.

Re:license
Andy, thanks for your quick response.
if I could get you to embellish... When a license is installed on 1 Windows PC, how to transfer that to another PC? Do I simply uninstall it from the original PC, then reinstall the software on a different Windows PC and use the same license key as on the original? Or is there a more complex procedure? Thanks! |

I moved your questions to a new topic since it didn't really have anything to do with the other thread's licensing on different OSes.
You can pretty much uninstall SageTV from one Windows PC & install on another, then use the same license on the new PC. As long as you aren't going to be using SageTV on the old PC, you are fine. If you do plan to use it on both, you'll need two different licenses & can change one if you want to. If you need to change the license on a PC, see this FAQ: Is there a way to re-enter a license on a computer? (I can't remember whether using the REGISTER parameter and entering nothing clears the license.) - Andy

Just last weekend I moved my license from an old computer running XP Pro to a completely new computer running WHS. I simply uninstalled the old version and installed SageTV on the new computer and entered in the original license code into the new installation. That was it - simple as can be.

nice
Thank you. My fear had been that the license code was attaching itself to a specific PC's SID, and then locking that in via the Internet. Looks like that is not the case. Thanks.

AFAIK this is the way it had always been with Windows systems. I've rebuilt my system several times over several different systems over several versions and was always able to just enter the key. With a PC client, once it is moved to a diiferent system you need to make sure you reboot the server before trying to use the client.

I don't think the windows licensing is tracked at all. It's just a matter of having the valid license for the software to function.... not even sure if it's authenticated with sage. Either way, you should have no issues moving from one system to another. Obviously, you are only authorized to use it on one machine at a time.
