Migrating from v6 to v7

Just a quick question, I noticed that in the features list it says that version 7 now places the metadata into the file itself so how would one go about migrating the old wiz.bin file into a new install of version 7 or is that part seemless

ok so now I have to ask is the wiz.bin file still needed because mine is like 8 years old and it really slows down the initial server start up and I'd like to get rid of it but I have over 1.5 tb of shows backed up and don't want to lose them either

You definitely want to keep your Wiz.bin. To speed up startup enable this in your Sage.properties file:

limited_carny_init=true

Only downside is it'll take some time before intelligent recording can kick in; but it'll still do all of your Favorite's recordings properly during that time period.

yes you still need the wiz.bin... the metadata is only stored in the file as backup (ie you corrupt your wiz.bin and want the data back in sagetv.

trust me without a central db the UI would be UNUSABLE

EDIT: looks like narflex beat me to it

So whenever I put an mpeg file with included metadata into my recording directory the metadata is copied into wiz.bin?
Even if this file was recorded on another SageTV instance?

Let's say I upgrade from V6 to V7, and I have 1TB of HD Mpeg2 PS recordings. Does V7 insert metadata into all of them? Or just into the new recordings that it makes?

If I have to roll back to V6, will it be able to deal with the recordings that V7 has injected metadata into? For that matter, will other media players (mplayer, vlc, xbmc, etc) still be able to recognize recordings as an Mpeg2 PS file and play it?

Thanks,

Drew

With my WHS, I usually uninstall an Add-in before I install a new version. If I do this for SageTV v7 (I already have v6 installed) will SageTV think I am installing SageTV for the first time (i.e.not allowing me to purchase/use an upgrade key)?

I really REALLY want to upgrade. I already purchased v7 upgrade and am ready to go, but I am leaving in 2 weeks for a weeks vacation without the wife...

soooooooo:

if i do the following will i be ok?

1) copy sagetv install driectroy
2) upgrade

then if things go south can i simply copy my backup copy of sagetv over the V7 install directory and be back up and running with my stable system i have today?

I realize that any recorded shows imported into the Wiz.bin after the upgrade will be lost, but at least my wife will be able to use the system as it was while im gone...

I use WHS and uninstalled v6 then installed v7 and entered the new lic. upgrade key otherwise the 21-day trial just resets.

Here's my current MO, which I hope will carry over to v7:
1. I record to mpg - some analog, some digital
2. To save space (and to playback better on my older placeshifter-using PC where most watching occurs), I convert to AVI in another location on my server; new file is linked to the same metadata & shows up correctly on the list of recorded shows. After checking the conversion, I delete the original mpg.
3. Occasionally, to further save space, I offload watched but "keeper" episodes to another drive, DVD, etc. Currently, I don't think restoring these to original location reassociates with the metadata, but I haven't tried real hard to make it do so.

So my questions:
1. Will conversions still keep their attachment to the metadata and display as shows?
2. Will the metadata be copied into the converted files, enabling better re-linking on restoring from backup/archive?

It will go back and insert metadata into all of your existing recordings the first time you run V7. Any other media player should have no problem reading these files; there's nothing non-standard we're doing (the metadata is inserted into padding fields which are ignored by all parsers)

I was just about to say the exact same thing!

When I read his question, I was saying to myself "ARE YOU NUTS?"

Seriously, are you new to SageTV? For the next 1-2 years, bugs are going to be coming out of v7 like the fed's print money.

Actually I just switched on my production system last night and it is as stable (after 24 hours) after ever before. We have been using only stock GUI + HDHR but after switch we have not found anything not working and are greatly benefiting from the speed increase. I don't know how Sage did it, but the speed improvement is amazing. I was considering getting HD200 because it was supposed to be faster than my HD100 which was usable (especially after I upgraded my server to Core i3) but not great. Now there is no reason to upgrade, The HD100 is super fast. Great job Sage.

So yes i am at time a little nuts , My wife understands its beta, and absolutly LOVES the new ui, BUT i just want to make sure that if i switch over completely i can get back to a stable version as a last ditch effort.

Does my idea sound lik eit will work

"if i do the following will i be ok?

1) copy sagetv install driectroy
2) upgrade

then if things go south can i simply copy my backup copy of sagetv over the V7 install directory and be back up and running with my stable system i have today?
