Proper naming convention for TV Series DVDs?
Hey Guys,
Is there a right and wrong way to name my folders for DVD rips of TV Series? I've seen different ways this is coming up automatically in Sage but it isn't consistent. I've done some searching through the forums but really didn't see an answer specific to this. As an example, for "Burn Notice" I have 4 discs for season 2. Should I name my folders like... "Burn Notice S02D01" for disc 1 or... "Burn Notice Season 2 Disc 1" or is there some other way to do it? I'm automatically getting the metadata but even for the same season, the meta data is sometimes a little different. Not a big deal but if there is a RIGHT way to name my folders, I'd like to do it the right way And, I'm just putting the folders for these DVDs in the same manner I would any movie. Meaning, I'm not creating sub folders for each individual disc with the main folder just being something like "Burn Notice Season 2". Not sure if I should be doing that or not? Thanks guys! |

My kneejerk reaction is there is no "right" way. What I mean is I only know of two providers that provide disc-based metadata for TV shows, and those are DVD Profiler and MyMovies. For either of those you need to have the name on the filesystem match that in the provider.
I don't think you'll get results from IMDB/TMdb/TVdb for a TV show disc. DVD Profiler should work great though. As should MyMovies. |

If it doesn't matter I suppose I'll just be consistent in how I do it and then see if I can update the metadata manually (if available). Thanks! |

I'm still of the opinion that tv shows are best left as separate episodes, and not stored 'per disc'. A little more work when ripping, but I feel it's worth it, especially if you import them into the sage recordings database, so you can use Malore or such to browse them.

Right now I have something like this... \DVDs\Movie X\ \DVDs\Movie y\ \DVDs\Burn Notice S02D01\ \DVDs\Burn Notice S02D02\ \DVDs\Movie z\ and so on |

1) It's a lot more work to rip them, especially if they're not well formatted. 2) The bigger issue is I haven't yet found a really good way of viewing them. I don't want them in my "Recordings" section, because well, they're not recordings. My "recordings" section is basically all transitory content. I really like the division between "Recordings" and imported media because it fits my use perfectly. Anything worth keeping, I buy on disc, and frankly almost nothing I record is worth keeping if only for the bad edits (commercials) and other crap that gets thrown over the picture. TV Explorer is cool, but I don't like how (last time I tried it) it replaced the recordings menu. Keeping TV shows in Disc format is the best compromise so far. |

Yeah, I was talking about extracting them each to individual video files. I honestly haven't done it in quite some time, mainly because I haven't bought any TV DVDs in quite some time (basically since I got more storage, and sage pretty much catches most of the shows I watch in reruns anyways).
You could sort it many ways, by folder, whatever, but if you bring it into the recordings, then it really doesn't matter the folder structure at all, though I would separate them by ShowTitle\Season xx\EpisodeNumber-EpisodeName.mkv or something similar (mostly for better sorting when using stuff outside of sage). As for keeping it segregated, if you use the Malore menus, you can have a separate view for 'archived' recordings, which would be perfect way to segregate 'keepers' from 'once-throughs'.
