Fanart Management Suggestion

I know this is lengthy but bare with me...

Right now, I can go through the physical fanart folders and look at the posters and backgrounds that get downloaded. Pretty quickly too, actually way more quickly than from the webgui. From here I can also delete foreign language ones, or ones that just don’t appeal to me, etc. This all works great. I can rest assured that my deleted fanart won’t be downloaded again thanks to the ignored images in the images file.

Lets say I want to add my own poster to a movie and make it the default. I drop my fabulous poster in the posters directory named whatever.jpg... Now to make this one appear as my default image I have to go into the webgui and set it as default. This can be time consuming for a lot of changes.

What if BMT could recognize a specific naming convention for the image file that I want to set as default? Call it folder.jpg or default.jpg or whatever.jpg.... Then BMT would be confined to using this one as the default.

I would think that the webgui could leverage this logic too. For example, when a person uses the webgui to change their default poster the function would rename the physical file to (default.jpg or folder.jpg or whatever.jpg) and this new priority would be assigned and the other file that was previously named (default or folder or whatever) would be renamed something insignificant to demote it...

So this way no matter how a person wants to manage their fanart the correct fanart will display systemically throughout all the plugins that will use it. Plus, if one wants to go through and assign a bunch of defaults, and clean out the foreign junk, it would be terribly time consuming using the webgui alone...

I see the webgui as a nice one-off approach or to change a few here and there.

What do you think? Any merit to the above methodology?

Not an answer, but a shameless plug regarding setting defaults - you can do this from the Phoenix UI now as well starting with 313. I'll let stuckless comment on your idea above.

Can 313 delete images too?

I know Stuckless had said something in the past about this. As the default sage reads folder.jpgs automatically and I think Phoenix should check that first imho as an override.

Shameless plug myself

We currently do this in diamond if it is set we check for folder.jpg first and then phoenix fanart if it doesn't exist.

The reasons this should be are three folder

1. Almost every other media application out there excepts folder.jpgs as fanart (including the default sagetv UI). Going against this doesn't seem the best step
2. It allows as you said simple and easy overriding of fanart to fanart of your choice. Without having to browse through folder structures.
3. Having to reset a "default" seems like overkill even if it is in a UI.

My 2 cents and like I said I know stuckless was looking at this a while back but he is a very busy guy and has allot on his plate.

The CMT plugin already offers View and some edit of the Fanart.

I would also suggest to ignore Phoenix UI. Unreleased plugins are useless for most of us. Plus I am using Diamond (because it is out and it works).

folder.jpg works well if you organize you movies in folders... which I don't So, for this to work, I'd need to user folder.jpg and moviefilename.jpg and check one, then the other, etc... I'm not against it, but it's a lot of checking for a default poster.

Originally I was using a filenaming convention to denote the default poster. The issue that when people would rename one poster to a new name, it required 2 moves and if one failed, then I needed to roll back etc. The other side effect was that the poster file would be cached in sagetv and most people would complain it wasn't working, but in reality it did work, but it was still cached in the sagetv ui

Phoenix also has multiple posters, backgrounds, etc, and not sure diamond/smm supports that, so using a folder.jpg works well there. Using a pointer to the default was the most reliable way that I could ensure that I'm delivering you the default poster.

I have considered, in addition to phoenix fanart, supporting folder based fanart where one would supercede the other... but it's never gone past the "thinking" phase

certainly, bmt needs to have a better means of managing the fanart, and that is in the works... although it may materialize as something along the lines of a "Phoenix Web" application.

I understand I guess my biggest issue/concern is your not even supporting the default sagetv method by ignoring the folder.jpgs. But I understand your reasoning as well.

I wish I would have been a sage user when the fanart storage discussions took place but I can't turn back time

Nope... Just my first initial and my last name combined. My wife works with radiation and she gets razzed for my last name all the time!
