yeah so the season and episode present in the file name will allow plex to scan correctly by default.

the case I am trying to handle is when there is no season and episode number and just some stupid file name like MikesNewRecordings-9989800-1.mpg

and there's plenty of those in my recordings. Anything local (news, sports, special events) won't have season/episode values assigned to them making them unavailable to Plex. I think your project is a necessity if all recordings are going to show up in Plex.

yeah i think it will be a good addition as well.

After making the agent, i would like to create an app which will allow us to sync watched status, and allow us to delete recordings remotely...thats a bit down the road though.

baby steps right :-)

Ive been using plex on the atv2, and while it is cool i am a bit underwhelmed with the playback of 1080p. my server is more than beefy enough to do the transcoding, and it just doesn't handle 1080p well at all.

I am going to return it and get the new roku2 xs this afternoon. I have read that the 1080p playback is flawless on it. while the ui isn't as pretty, its still functional as a replacement client in my opinion.

I am just starting to try it out. My initial test was just to see if it would play but now last night I tried watching a show that was recording and it behaved just like you described. I didn't restart watching to see if it would "reload" as I was comparing picture quality with my Sage Extended and just left it on the extender..as I thought it was a better looking picture than Plex via my 2011 Mac Mini base. (might return it)

I picked up a Roku 2 xs to continue testing with cause the ATV2 was pissing me off. playback of 1080p content was not good at all, and HD tv was mediocer at best!

so far the roku plays everything i throw at it except for Batman the Dark Knight. it will play that but buffers way to much for my liking. the plex ui on roku is pretty ok.

HD, SD, tv and dvd / bluray other than the one i mentioned abovev play back perfectly and look beautiful.

no audio sync issues or anything like that.

There are other features in plex that can do look-ups for NON season-episode type shows (like news programs - things run daily that don't really have seasons). In that case, you can name them with the air date, and plex will still scrape what it can. (this is in the plex wiki I believe as well).

Turns out my issue with streaming the dark knight was due to the fact that i had a ton of stuff going on in my office for work. gotomeeting, etc while testing that video. I connected the roku directly to the wireless N, which plugs directly into the gigabit switch in the basement (no intermediate hop) And now dark knight is streamind perfectly!

i also forgot that the gigabit switch in my office has the 4 HDHR tuners running on it...

I thought I had read that it could not do music or photo's yet. They where still working on that. Was that just an old thread or is that still the current state.

That seems like really outdated information...

Wow, they can hardly call it a "media center" application -- and it's been like that since May?

SageTV had spoiled us. It's the only reason Google can get away with treating their customer base the way they are now...they are/were the only game in town.

Well, I'm not talking about media center apps that do PVR (SageTV and Plex/etc are not in the same class of software to my mind) -- Boxee and XBMC both do music and photos (though Boxee still has plenty of room for improvement )

(Oops, I didn't realize that was a limitation for the ROKU Plex app, never mind! )

Sage in my opinion does a piss poor job at pictures and music anyways. Now Phoenix on the other hand it does a phenomenal job at music, no pictures yet. If the device does video movies and recording for 99 that's pretty darn good IMHO. I haven't decided if I am keeping it yet and continuing on with Plex or not , but for now it's a fun toy, and performs better than the atv2. At least in my experience.

I agree, but it's better than nothing. I am going to have to try the Roku2 as I am also not super impressed with the ATV2, but to be honest, part of what drove me to Plex versus XBMC was it's ability to transcode to the ATV2 so I didn't have to convert my recordings just to watch them on the the ATV2.

Which one did you get? The XS?

Yeah I went for the xs cause of the network jack. My thinking was that it would be better for full 1080p...

I like Plex cause of the transcoding and the flexibilty thr gives for future clients, but xbmc is way more versatile. With xbmc I can switch from gbpvr to mediaportal to mythtv for recordings and keep the same front end...downside is there is a lot of setup...MySQL, setting that up on each client, getting nettops for at the tv, then copying your config files all over so u have a unified experience.

They all have pros and cons and I honestly am having trouble picking the best. :-/

I have plenty of extenders right now but if I can transition slowly and make it as seeemless as possible, the more accepting wifey will be ya know.

The problem with our options in the post-Sage world is that there are no decent extenders other than using PCs as clients.
