Dish Hopper with Sagetv?

Hey guys,

I am currently with Directv and using 2 HDPVR's and http tuning along with 3 hd homeruns for local broadcasts.

I'm considering leaving directv for Dish and am wondering what is the best route to go to keep 2 tuners available for sage.

I'm guessing that the hopper isn't going to work great for this?

Best route? Probably get a few old VIP211 boxes (not the VIP211k) with the R5000 mod. You don't want a DVR if you're going to use Sage, not only is it more expensive but you (generally) only get one video output from the box even though they have multiple tuners.

My friend has the hopper, and the Joey's communicate back to the hopper in order to provide mutliple room DVR. That being said, there is only 1 output (possibly 2 i can't quite recall) on the hopper itself. Unless you want to stick some HDPVRs on there and record it that way, you are sorta out of luck.

Id go with the VIPs. I have one with dual tuners, and am currently using the dishnetwork tv2irconverter box which allows me to use a usbuirt to control both tuners on the box with IR... hence giving me 2 dish tuners i can use as sage inputs for recordings. the vip box i have has dual composite cable on it 1 for tv1 and 1 for tv2.. the quality is quite good for composite..

My understanding is that Dish won't activate any old 211 boxes on a new account, so I am thinking it is not an option for me to go with the R5000 mod.

Which leaves me with staying where I am with Directv or getting the newer receivers with Dish. If I change and am with Dish for 2 years I may as well get the hopper and a load of the Joeys that will cover me for recording in the event my Sage extenders die.

Only reason I am even thinking of moving is because of NBC Sports Live Extra and Premier League Extra Time not currently being offered by Directv, and no timeline on if they are getting it or not.

At this point in time, the only reason I even have Satellite is the damn live sports, without it I'd drop it all in a heartbeat!

FWIW, if I were going to Dish or DTV at this point in time, I'd probably just get their DVR (Hopper/Genie) and be done with it. Comskip is the only thing I'd really lose leaving Sage behind as my DVR, and I'm not sure Collosi/HDPVRs/tuning/etc are worth the hassle.

One thing I can say for absolute sure, if you don't plan on using their DVR, I wouldn't get one, it will make using Sage harder.

With Tivo, it was possible to pull the recording into the SageTV server. Does anyone know if that is possible with the Dish Hopper?

Thanks,
John

I was considering conveting over to the Hopper/Joey when they came out (I have 2 HD-PVRs), but the Joey only has composit and HDMI outputs, no component. It would have reduced the number of cables coming into the house from 3 to 1. Oh well.

You do know that DirecTV has some thing as Hopper/Joey but is Genie HR44 DVR Receiver & C41 RVU Genie Mini Client and it rec 5 true channel unlike Hopper it only 3 channel don't fooled by the so called 6 channel Rcording it not a true it really 6 shows during primetime using PTAT and should beware both can only do up to three steam.
