Plex On Xbox

Plex announced today that they are releasing a Plex app for the Xbox One and 360 tomorrow. The announcement is on their blog here: https://blog.plex.tv

Will be interesting to see what the Xbox will play without transcoding.

Just got an email saying that it is out.

By the way anyone know whatever happened to the Xbox One (or at the time Xbox 720) "lite" that MS was rumoured to be introducing? This was a device that was supposed to be akin to a media streamer/extender that would not have all of the gaming horsepower but it could do all of the media stuff. That makes sense if MS wants to compete with the Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, etc since it isn't economically feasible to put a $500 (or so) Xbox One at all of the TVs in your house.

I personally never heard a rumor about that one.

Here is just one example of such a rumour. http://bgr.com/2012/11/21/xbox-lite-rumor-2013-xbox-tv/

I am pretty sure that there was some discussion here about this as well from the perspective of this being an extender replacement.

Now if the Plex guys would only do some kind of meaningful integration with HDHomerun and / or TabloTV we would be going somewhere. As it stands the current "channel" based integration attempts look meh....

You need more than that unless you want to just watch live TV and who wants to watch live TV? You would need to build the whole recording engine, etc.

Sports fans.

You know, the ones who DirecTV felt justified their $12 BILLION DEAL they just renewed with the NFL.

Not me. I am a huge sports fan but I watch all of my sports in near real time. An NFL game contains 15-20 minutes of action - why spend 3.5 hours watching the game.

A hockey game takes 60 minutes, not 2.5 hours. Watching sports via Sage, especially while leaning heavily on the SkipFWD and SkipFWDX2 buttons are huge productivity enhancers for me.

And the HDHR and Tablo only help with OTA content and more sports are moving away from OTA, the NFL being one exception although more of their games are moving cable only.

But sports are the only reason that I still have a cable sub.

Watching live sports is more then the few seconds of thrills, it's the whole thing surrounding it. I love to watch racing, all racing. Some of it I DVR and some I absolutely have to watch live. Nothing like having everyone over for a Saturday night race and BBQ outside by the pool ... can't beat that. But that's me.

I installed it last night. Only Video libraries are there, no photos. Works like any other Plex client, just has the same interface as the xbox. Not sure if the new trailers/extra's feature is available or not.

I wanted to install it last night but didn't get home till really late due to some wild goings on here in Oklahoma City happening right outside the building where I work.

If you watched the news yesterday about the hostage and homicide situation, that all happened right in front of my office. Crazy stuff.

If anyone is trying this - I think you may have to be a Plex Pass subscriber and you need the latest server version. You have to get the latest server version by going to the Plex web page downloads section and logging in with your Plex ID - if you try checking for upgrades in the Plex application it will tell you that you are running the latest version.

I finally got a chance last night to install the app but I couldn't find it. We have just an Xbox 360. What category is the app under? I did a search for "Plex" and it turned up nothing.

I think the app is only available for the XB1 right now. The XB360 app is "coming soon".

That stinks. I see the detail now in the announcement. I guess my mind glossed right over that point.

I installed this on both my Xbox Ones and it works great for Movies or TV.
I have been able to stream mp4, avi and mkv files from Plex to the Xbox without issues. Every thing works great for playback and the default views but I can't seem to sort and filter by genre or create any custom views at this time.

The Plex app on the X1 does not support music at this time. (But it is coming)
It does not appear to support the plugins like Colbert etc as well.

Have never tired the SageTV app with Plex just XBMC so can comment if that is working. May give it a try though.
