I'm not sure I know the answer, but I'll share what I know. If you look in the "startsagecore" shell script, you will see that it creates an environment variable with the key on the first line. The file will need to be in the same directory as this script, and I believe you also need to execute it from this directory.
The second mistake, and this was my issue, is I used the wrong key so the server was rejecting my attempts to connect. I used wireshark to sniff the connection and I could see the system attempting to reach out an connect.
When you attempt to connect to the EPG what error do you get? Is your firewall blocking any outbound ports?
