For those running V9 on Linux...

Has anyone increased the Java Heap Size to a couple of gig and tried to concurrently connect a large number of extenders simultaneously, say more than 5 extenders? If so how do you find performance?

I will be soon. I have my heap at 2048 and have run multiple placeshifters as a test but I will be moving 3 of my HD300's to it within the next few days and will report back.

I should point out the I am not a Linux person...at all. But the write up by other forum members and help from Google searches and other forum members and posts has been great.

The Linux server has been very stable for the past 3-4 days while I have been testing and getting my configuration the way I want it. I have it setup now to auto configure each mini client so that Gemstone is auto configured the way I like it and consistently across any client. Even new placeshifters including the Android Miniclient comes up completely the way I want Gemstone to look. (I will likely write up a post on this for those interested but it involved some playing around with the "RemoteClients.properties.defaults" file). Works great so far in testing. It has also given me some more ideas for features to include in Gemstone

I found the move rather painless and was able to retain my watched flags using BMT and some folder hiding/showing.

I will very soon be running this as my new V9 Linux Production box....likely by this weekend.

I also have a Shield on it's way so I will add that to the mix soon too. I figured that with my 3 HD300's I was always at the brink with a Windows server that I needed to bite the bullet and move to 64bit Linux with the Android stuff working so well and more Gemstone testing to do on the Android interfaces.

I am contemplating a move to Linux from Windows as well, although I'm quite nervous about it because I'm a Windows guy through-and-through and feel lost in Linux. However, I have 5 HD300s and it's always been a problem for me. Get the 4th HD300 started up, and the UI on all slow to a crawl. I've been hoping for a 64-bit Windows version, but I'm not sure we'll see that anytime soon, so perhaps Linux is the way to go.

I have 5 HDPVRs and 5 USB-UIRTs in my setup. Anything I should be concerned about?

Thanks.

I run 1-3 HD300's + 2 HDPVRs on my linux server with a 1G jvm. I suspect there is a small memory leak, in sagetv, or the plugins... since about ever 2-3 months I have to restart the sagetv process (usually do do out of memory).

Not all HDPVRs work in linux... so you'll want to check your specific model numbers.

I also use a unit called CommandIR for tuning, since I always had issues with the LIRC turning. LIRC worked, but I would get too many missed missed channel numbers, resulting in wrong recordings. Since using CommandIR I've probably had a wrong channel, maybe 5 times in 7 years.

Setting up SageTV, in linux, is probably a little more work than Windows (maybe... I've never set it up in windows)... but once it's set up, it's generally pretty stable.

Why five USB-UIRTs? You could get away with two since they each can control three zones, assuming that you shield the IR inputs on a couple of the boxes.

I could never get that working right originally - inconsistent results, so I gave up and went with a unique device for each receiver and haven't had an issue since.

Interesting - I have used it for a couple of zones but not all three. It wasn't an issue in the past as I primarily used firewire for channel changing on my Rogers STBs. Now that I am moving to a V9 server on 64 bit Win10 I can't use firewire any more so I will be going to multi-zone USB-UIRTs.
