Keeping system updated

I followed the Windows instructions a few months back, installing 7.1.9, overwriting the EXE files and copying the various JAR files, etc... The system has been running great! Thanks for your efforts.

In terms of updates, what is the recommended procedure. I recently copied the 9.0.4.232 sage.JAR file to my server and cients, but are there additional files to keep updated? Do I need new EXEs or other support files?

What is the best practice for updating?

IMHO the best practice is to use the Windows Installer. IT would be the only way to ensure you get all the files that are updated. For example, there have been changes to the DirectShow related files that someone that only copied in the EXE's would not have (it likely would not affect you but some change could in the future).

Of course it is new and likely was not around when many people moved to V9 on Windows systems or they may have used some of the earliest betas.... either way, the first use of the latest installers may be a little work to get everything working well (like potentially needing to run the installer a second time on Repair).

But the installer is stable enough at this point that moving forward with each new release it should upgrade the previous release well....that's why it's now in RC version.

Of course if you try it out and have issues please share so others can learn and I can fix things.

on a related note - is there some mechanism to either automatically update the software or alert us that there is an update? Just thinking how Plex does this, and wondering if that is in the works for sage? Thanks for the great work. I am heading north in a week to move my mom back to sagetv

Does the v9 RC installer successfully upgrade a system that was installed using 7.1.9 with copied files? Are all of the settings, plugins recording schedules, etc... maintained?

Yes...it should. Just ensure as always you have a backup

Just fyi, I had to install twice on a new upgrade from 7 to 9.

I'd previously read that a double install would be needed for upgrading from an older 9 release but it looks like it's also needed when going from 7 to 9.

So far things are still working great.

By this you mean a repair was needed?

Odd. Had the V7 been manually upgraded to a previous V9 by changing any files or was it strictly a V7 install?

And may I ask what the symptoms were that made you run the repair.... just wondering to see if I need to fix something in the installer.

Thanks

yes, I ran the installer again and specified 'repair'

This was on top of a stock v7 install from several years ago. This machine hadn't seen 9 before.

I tried this because every time I ran sage after installing 9 I encountered a java exception. Sorry, I didn't save the details.

I will see if I can recreate the issue.

Thanks
