SageTV programming

I taught myself programming when the dinosaurs were still roaming the earth. I could modify programs using debug in dos to use different equipment, like printers, also low level formatted hard drives with debug(I know, dinosaurs). I understand the basics of OOP. What language should I learn to help with development? I recently started taking online courses on C#.

SageTV is almost exclusively Java (well, the meat of it - there are native bits to deal with platform/hardware specific stuff written in c). You can browse through the code at http://github.com/google/sagetv

Although the parts most in need of attention are those native C areas, specifically on Windows. Directshow, 64 bit, etc.

IMHO the development environment is harder to pick up than the programming language. Picking up Java, C, C++ is all relatively easy. Learn how to use github, a good IDE, and the Linux and Windows development environments. Those things are harder to learn than any programming language.
