Windows 11 announcement
Still early of course, but discovered using the Windows PC Health checker that my server won't be able to run Windows 11, as the AMD A10 processors won't be supported (and I doubt the motherboard in there does TPM 2.0 anyway).
Maybe this will get me to upgrade to something of this era. |

I read that the CPU requirement is not a "hard requirement" and most decent CPUs can run Win 11 - check and see if your BIOS has “PSP fTPM” (AMD) or "PTT" for Intel and enable it and re-run - those are effectively a built-in TPM. I can't seem to find a list for Intel but I read that almost all CPUs since Gen 4 have PTT.

The official Win 11 CPU list indicates an 8th generation or newer Intel CPU is required - It looks like the software is factoring in the "soft requirement" of the CPU - I'll try my 9th gen when I get home and post - this morning the health checker said my core i5 9600K was not ready either, but I have since learned about turning on PTT in the BIOS, which I am fairly certain is currently off
Update: After turning on PTT, my PC is now Windows 11 ready - conclusion: PC Health App is checking for TPM/PTT and checking the CPU list

I think if history has taught us anything, then Windows 11 will be a dud, Windows 12 will fix everything wrong with Windows 11, and not to fret, because the Linux PC Health Checker says that it'll run on your old hardware just fine.

The announcements didn't talk too much about what is advancing on WSL. Presumably the Android emulator on Win11 will use WSL. WSL is becoming more and more useful and I have been using it a fair bit and it has added a lot more functionality. You can now get at least three Linux distros as well - Ubuntu, Kali and Suse.
It will be interesting to see if the Win11 Android emulator will run the SageTV Android client.

Many people will not be able to run Win11 as this is a pretty high bar in terms of having a fairly new PC. From TheVerge:https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/25/2...e-requirements Quote:

I suspect this has more to do with the announced Windows 11 requirement of TPM 2.0 support (Trusted Platform Module) than anything else.
TPMs support is a fairly new thing, so many of the older processors/motherboards aren't going to support it. It will be interesting to see if Windows backs down from this at all or if it ends up being a mandatory requirement for Windows 11 to work at all.

How will this affect running Windows 11 in VMs, like under unRAID as a host OS. Will you still need TPM or can that be "emulated" by the host OS in a WM?

I'm much more concerned that Windows 11 might introduce some new "features" we have to work around to keep SageTV running.

For me, I want as few updates and changes as possible on certain systems that will never or rarely interface to the interweb, so I've been installing Win 8.1 and setting it to no updates. I have a Win 8.1 VM that serves as an HDPVR2 network tuner server set up this way, and I don't want it getting mucked up.

Almost ditto for me, although I do updates.
I have two servers running at home and both are Windows 8.1 64-bit. I don't need or want any of the Win10 garbage on those. One is SageTV, Plex and assorted AV stuff. The other is BlueIris. |
