Yep, "supply and demand" is the name of the game, if I remember correctly from my high school econ class. I certainly don't begrudge anyone a living (even in the open-source era) or the right to set their price.

I don't see any harm, however, in mentioning that (at least a couple of) potential customers are dissuaded by (or even incredulous about) the price. Pointing out that a few more Sage users might pull the trigger at $30 has to be more helpful information than simply not buying a product (which is really not much information at all).

Besides, what fun is a forum if you can't pule and moan every once in a while.

White94Cobra it impossable for any one edit out commercials with a 1 hour show in about 2 minutes using just the keyboard h@ll I can't do this and I being this stuff for min years now.
The best as rigth now are TMPGEnc MPEG Editor, VideoRedo, Womble MPEG-VCR & MPEG Video Wizard and all them output same quality as the original source from all test I done with all them.
Now as for who the best
1: Womble MPEG-VCR (It just lack nice UI).
2: VideoReDo (Lack Speed Switch for Fast Forward Play and Fast Reverse Play and lack the standerd control buttons).
3: TMPGEnc MPEG Editor (Work but I found it do odd to work with and poor control).

Now as for MPEG Video Wizard is in it own class all by it self becuase it more of Advanced MPEG Editor for thoses that need thing like video editing effects, etc etc.

Will this type of software be needed for commercial editing once QManager is done in Cayars' STV?

And I know this will sound ignorant and all but hey, I'm new. Soooo what does STV stand for?

.STV is the file extension Frey Tech gave to the files that specify the SageTV user interface.

... so an STV file is a customized "SKIN" for Sage, if you will. These are created using the Sage Studio application.

I hate to call it just a "SKIN" since almost all of the STVs do so much more, but I couldn't find another (better) analogy.

Chalk up another convert. I have both Womble mpeg-vcr and Womble Video Wizard. Mpeg-vcr was my normal tool for cutting movie commercials and Video Wizard for splicing multiple mgp's together (like vob chapters, first renamed to mpg so doesn't recode). Womble mpeg-vcr worked well for cutting commericals. But I hit a movie recording (Shenandoah) Womble mpeg-vcr just wouldn't do right. Once it truncated the movie about half way. Rebooted and redid, lost audio about 2/3 way through. Rebooted and redid, playback of file hangs about 1/2 through. The org file plays fine all the way BTW. Ok, downloaded VideoRedo trial. Processed and oops, can only do 30min. Oh, now it says can ask for Free Trial Key. Saved project so wouldn't have to remark commericals, applied for & got Free Trial Key enabling full functionality Trial in a minute or 2, opened saved project and processed flawlessly. Same recording Womble mpeg-vcr failed 3 times to process correctly.

I'll pay the $50 when Trial expires, I agree seems high priced for this type of tool but it works. Worked and VideoRedo is much easier to use locating and marking commerical segments than womble IMO. Doesn't actually process the files any faster after marking as far as I can tell but faster and easier to use marking segments.

Yes, comskip/comdetect is not accurate enough to use it's results for direct cutting, maybe 90-95% accurate. Fine for playback of shows just using the markers but not for actual permanent cutting for archiving. You'll need to fine tune the cuts so these type tools still necessary IMO.

I use Virtualdub-MPEG2. Easy cutting, fast & stable with HD sources (Videoredo crashes on all my HD footage) and did I mention... free?

Maybe all the apps you guys are talking about do more, but I have been completely happy with it so far.

Cheers,

Womble Mpreg VCR seem to be slow when saving after marking your cuts... Is there an option I'm missing? Videoredo is much quicker.

Thanks, trying out my options.

Actually, if you download the trial it has a 30 minute cutoff. BUT, if you look at their Purchase page, they have an option to request a trial key, which unlocks the program but limits the trial to 30 days. If you do that, they send you a trial key which allows you to edit and save larger files -- if there are any limits other than the 30 days, I'm not aware of them. I did that today and it works fine. I really like this, since my other attempt at editing used NeroVision Express.

I'm probably going with VideoReDo pretty soon -- especially to take advantage of their "free upgrade to VideoReDo/Plus" offer.

First, I want to talk to one of my buddies who is into video big-time -- and who I convinced to build/buy a custom HTPC using SageTV.

I'm just jumping into this type of editing. Since this thread is a bit older, I wanted to confirm if these are still the best MPEG2 cutters out there. Should I look at other alternatives by now?

Can they all read Comskip at this point?

Cheers,

I am evaluating Virtualdb-MPEG2. It is quicker to remove commericals from a mpeg video file. The interface is a bit stark. It appears that the edited file can only be saved to a AVI file not a mpeg file -- a big downside to this editing program.
