Downgrading JAVA

Hi,

What is the best way to move from JAVA 1.5_xx to JAVA 1.4_xx?

I saw a comment from Narflex the other day that indicated that JAVA 1.4 is now the preferred solution and I saw comments from other users that switching to the older version of JAVA eliminated drops to the desktop and memory related issues -- both of which I have once in a while. I don't have these problems terribly often, but since those two PCs are used solely for SageTV I think I'd like them to be in sync with what the SageTV developers are coding against.

So, I'd like to make the switch. Do I just install the old version and call it a day? Do I need to uninstall the existing stuff first (and how do I do that?).

I saw a comment from someone saying that you need to also go into a control panel applet and turn off automatic updates. What is the name of the applet?

Thanks in advance!

You can have multiple versions installed. The last one installed is usually the default. Running "java - version" from a command prompt will tell you what version Sage will be using, but it's probably better to just uninstall the 1.5 version before installing 1.4. Automatic updates would only need to be turned off if you had both versions installed and you wanted to have 1.4 as your default. If you only have one version installed it will not update across versions ie: 1.4 - 1.5

More importantly, what version are you running now? The dropout problems were fixed in 1.5.0_10, and I'm running 1.5.0_11 now and for me it is faster and more stable than any of the 1.4 versions I ran.

Currently I'm running 1.5.0_06. I suppose I could upgrade to 1.5.0_11 and see how that goes.

Ultimately I'll probably install the 1.4.x series since that seems to be the development target for SageTV, but I'm not averse to trying the 1.5.0_10 release since installing it is a pretty trivial step. If it woks better, great. If not, I'll switch to the 1.4.x series. The problems I'm having are quite minor in nature, so its not a life-or-death thing.

Thanks for your reply.

Hmm, theres an awful lot of downloads at the SUN site. Which do I want to use? I'm guessing "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6", but not really sure. I guess I can install that and see what SageTV reports in the information box about which version of JAVA it is. I took the one from the "latest releases" page. Is this correct?

When I was checking out new versions to update for the DST changes, I went to Java SE Downloads. That page has a link to the latest (v6, or 1.6 as it reports itself) and a link for Previous Releases.

I've been using version 6 (1.6?) for the last 2 months, and not had any problems. (But then I don't currently us addons)

Is there a program you are trying to use that won't work with v6? If not, us the latest, as it seems MUCH faster.
