I don't understand Java version stuff...

I keep hearing people talk about Java version and how it helped or hurt their Sage viewing.

I don't understand it...Can somebody give me some basics...please

I just checked my Java version and it's 1.5.0_06

My Sage version is 1.6.19

I'm curious about it because I saw a post where somebody said that by going to Java version 1.6.0_06 many problems were cleared up..

If upgrading is good for me, also tell me how to do that...

Thank you,

Gary Ellis

Hi,

here is how I updated

- download Java 1.6 Update 1 from http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/downlo...BundleId=11193
- Stop SageTV and/or the SageTV Service
- Uninstall the currently installed version of Java. This is save unless you have Java Apps installed which rely on a specific version of Java.
- Install Java 1.6 Update 1
- Start SageTV Service and/or SageTV

all done

I dont know which problems your facing.

I upgraded because the GUI on the MVP is much quicker with version 6.

When you install java, you are actually installing the java runtime environment. This is required to run any applications written in the java language. As new versions of the language (and environment) are released, bugs are fixed or sometimes added. The version you are running has some known problems, which are fixed in the latest release. Also with the latest release they have significantly improved the speed.

Aloha,
Mike

Because there were known problems and memory leaks with the version you're running. 1.5.0_X.

Geez - I had JRE 1.4.2 installed; no wonder I was having black screen issues constantly. Well I will go and get 1.6 now and see if it helps. It is surprising that the sagetv installer would not check for pre-requisites like the correct version of java...

It does. It checks for 1.4.2 as a minimum requirement.
