Can't play WMV files?

A few days ago I posted a message, then submitted a support request, about playing VC-1 encoded WMV files in Sage. As it turns out, Sage cannot play this kind of file.

Since then though, I've noticed I can't play *any* WMV files (I have a bunch, and most are not VC-1)! This is on 2 different clients, and the files play fine in WMP. I'm sure they played in Sage 6.0.19, I can't recall if I've tried any since I upgraded to 6.1.

The symptom is the same as I described in my other post - an error message indicating there is a "problem rendering the video portion of the content".

All my imported videos with other codecs (Divx, xVid, MPEG2), and Sage recorded programs play fine.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do the clients have direct access to the directories where the files are located? If you were able to play them before, but can't now, clients may need to play them by accessing the files directly rather than streaming them through the server. This would requier UNC paths or mapped drive lettters on the client PCs for the import paths, and permission for the clients to access those locations.

Andy,

I'll definitely check, but I have a hunch that's not the problem.

The WMV's that won't play are in the same folders as the AVI's, MPG's, TS's etc. that play fine.

I agree that it may not be the problem, but all those other file types can be streamed through the server. Ripped DVDs cannot be streamed, though, and neither can some WMV files.

Andy,

I owe you a case of beer!

I recently changed my Sage setup from standalone machines to client-server. The library import directories were pointed to the local drives on the server, not surprisingly the clients couldn't figure out how to access them over the network. I reconfigured the import directories to use the share names and it works!

Thanks and have a great weekend!
