License error for new extender

I received my Sage extender and followed the instructions to install the license key and get this error:
"The key you entered is an upgrade key. You must have a valid key already on the system before installing it. Please enter your original key, then try this one again. If you don't have your original key, or it does not work, please contact the program's author for assistance."

I do not have a license for the SageTV program, just the one I received with the extender.

Since you have to run SageTV server in order to have something to connect the extender to, you'll need a license for SageTV.

When you start SageTV on the server, it will ask for the license for SageTV.

To enter a license for the extender, you'll need to exit SageTV on the server & register the extender license using the app for that purpose, as described in the extender instructions. But again: the extender won't work properly w/o a SageTV server license.

Will the extender work with my MS Media Center OS without the SageTV server software. If not, is their a bundle price or discount for the Extender with the SageTV server software?

The MVP only has the SageTV interface on it when connected to a SageTV server; otherwise, you would check out the original Hauppauge MVP software.

If you already have an MVP extender license from SageTV, then you don't need this combo, you would only need the SageTV server license.
