Should FLAC work right out of the box?

I get an error on playback of any FLAC files...

Wed 9/3 20:51:49.520 Built:sage.PlaybackException: ERROR (-5,0x8007000e): There was a problem rendering the audio portion of the content for playback.

It works right out of the box with my extenders. To play it on a PC client, I think you need a codec.

I noticed something. When I use
always_use_dshow_player=TRUE it doesn't work, but when I use
always_use_dshow_player=false it works.

With the false it calls the FFMPEG decoder properly.

Short of installing the Winamp plugin, is there any other workarounds?

As mikehaney stated above you need to install the FLAC codec on your PC client. That's why when you set use dshow player =true it doesn't work. When set to false it uses the Sageplayer which is essentially the mplayer which uses ffmpeg and can play FLAC. Go here to download the codec: http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

So you're saying once I load this I should still be able to leave my dshow=true setting ON, right?

Yes sir.

It's been a while and I had forgotten why I set the property for the always use dshow player to "true". So I set it back to the default of "always_use_dshow_player=false"
and fired up a 1080p mkv file. It used "FFmpeg H.264" as the decoder (instead of my beloved Divx H.264 decoder) so obviously I'm going to want to leave this setting as it was before, which is always_use_dshow_player=TRUE.

So, with it set to true obviously it's looking for a dshow filter to playback the flac file, which I do have installed as they playback fine in mplayer and Windows Media Player.

Any ideas?

Hmmm.. it looks from that graph image, that the FLAC filter is both the source filter AND the decoder, as it is outputting decoded PCM (which is being picked up by AC3Filter, I'm guessing for AC3 encoding to go to your receiver). This method of source and decoder is perhaps the problem, as I think sage always tried to use its own specific source filters. IF this is the way that sourceforge flac filter works, then THAT one probably won't work with sage. Instead, try ffdshow. It supports flac, and it loads as a decoder filter only, using any generic source filter. It should work with sage (and end up supporting pretty much every other codec imaginable). It can even do the AC3 encoding for you, and you can leave AC3Filter out of the mix entirely, if you so choose.

Actually you might want to try the ffdshow audio decoder, it can decode flac, or maybe this flac decoder:

http://www.xiph.org/dshow/

I'm guessing what you installed was the flac package from SF, which doesn't have a dshow decoder with it.

It's funny you linked that as it's the first one I installed before starting this thread. It enabled FLAC for Windows Media Player/Classic for me, but it's not working in Sage.

Are you saying to add this to the client properties?
videoframe/flac_audio_decoder_filter=ffdshow Audio Decoder

If so, that ain't working. Again, if I switch the always use dshow back to "false" then it plays just fine in Sage..

It's puzzling...

I'm having the same problem. I was using the Winamp plugin, and am trying to get away from using it, to reduce the amount of stuff I have to have installed.

I installed ffdshow tryouts (a branch from the original ffdshow), which supports FLAC, and set videoframe/flac_audio_decoder_filter=ffdshow Audio Decoder, and I still do not get FLAC playback. The winamp property is also set to false when trying this, and that doesn't help.

FLAC-download

I don't use ffdshow but you probably need the directshow filter for FLAC. Other players use a plugin.

Quote:
If you want to play FLAC files, here is how with some popular players:
Windows Media Player (WMP) - Microsoft does not make it easy, but try this DirectShow filter
Winamp - Winamp plays FLAC out of the box (download the Full version to also get FLAC encoding).
dbPowerAMP Audio Player - Install the FLAC plugin.
Media Center/Media Jukebox - Install the in_FLAC plugin.
MediaMonkey - Plays FLAC out of the box.

Thanks Gerry.

I installed the directshow filters from here:
http://www.xiph.org/dshow/

After a reboot, still get the error message about trying to render the audio...

Any other ideas?

I just checked playback in WMP, and it works just fine, plays using the directshow filter I just installed.

Is there a specific way to tell Sage how to play it?

Would that be installed instead of ffdshow, the FLAC codec I just installed, or both?
