Well I updated to java 6 update 10, and no difference. I still must reboot every two days in order to stop the slowness.

Mine is getting so bad...

First it was every Sunday afternoon it would all fall apart while trying to watch a Football game, so I thought "Sage must hate the Patriots!"

It's been getting worse and worse, and I'm thinking I need to schedule reboots every morning or early afternoon or something when I'm not home, and then it will be fine to record properly and get through the night.

How does one raise the ammount o memory available to Java? I want to see if that helps?

Could it be the large ammount of files in my media directories?

Once I had a porblem, and the support from sage told me that the scanning could be slowing it down (I have about 600Gb in my media center dirs, and like 200gb in my PVR dir)

I also tried deleting a ton of the older recordings in my rec list that I no longer would be likely to watch, and that hasn't seemed to make a difference. I'm at about 50% of my 1.5TB available.

For all the people having memory leak problems: what customizations (if any) are you running? Also what capture devices? And OS?

Just curious if there might be a commonality between the systems that need constant rebooting and those that do not. My system is running 6.4.8 in service mode (used as the client as well) & java 6 update 10 (1.6.0_10) without the mentioned problems.

See sig for most information.

I am running NO customizations. Everything is directly out of the box as far as Sage goes.

In that case I'm pointing my finger at the HD100s as the common ground (atleast looking through the posts in this thread of those having problems). Except paulbeers isn't having problems, and his sig shows HD100s. I have one myself, but it is running in placeshifter mode so my not having problems is not apples to apples.

My last thought would be HD100 firmware version??? Maybe?

Well that could make sense because when 6.4.8 was released they also released the firmware for the HD100.

I checked last night, and I am running Java 6 update 7 (and not 10 as I had previously mentioned). I apologize. I am running two HD100's and my server has been up for a couple of weeks (I believe?). Last night I looked at my java heap numbers and I was at something liek 153 / 243 / 533 (the first two are rough numbers). Based on this, I can say with pretty much certainty that I am not experiencing memory leaks. I am not running any Sage customizations right now.....

I'd place my money on a customization. Otherwise a lot more people (such as those of us at SageTV) would likely be seeing the same problem. I could be wrong of course; but the first thing we'd have anyone do in the course of resolving this issue would be using the default SageTV3 UI and disabling all customizations. If you still see a leak after that; then definitely submit a bug report. http://sagetv.com/bugs.html

To see uptime you can do the following:

Start -> Run -> type "cmd" press enter.
at the command prompt type "systeminfo", then scroll to the top and look for "System Up Time".

This will tell you how long the machine has been up (and other useful information).

Personally I use a program called bginfo that puts valuable information on the background of the desktop. Sorry I do this for a living and get geeky with stuff like this.

As stated earlier, I have NO customizations. I have not even changed the screen from the default.

No customizations, In a previous install on another machine I had SageMC, and comskip, but in this one it is clean and it has been since 2 years (most of the 6.3 cycle and the 6.4 cycle).

Now that I mention it, I do run the Mytheatre plguin, but that is about it.

OS: Windows XP sp3
Java: Java 6 Update 10
Mem: 2.0Gb
Enocoders: Hauppage 500PVR Dual Capture, and Mytheatre plugin on a DVB-S card
Decoders: 3 Huappage SD PVR, 1 HD1000, 2 or 3 Placeshifters on Wifi Laps
Hardrives: PVR = 300gb, Media = 600GB on Raid0 All full
Sage: 6.4.8 in service mode

Problems: slowdowns since recently, I am not sure if my Wiz file is just too big (been using sage since 2.x version) was fine for most of 6.3, and even since the release of 6.4. It is just about a month or two ago that everything slows if I don't restart the service every two days. My server is at 0%- 5% usages when it slows, so I don't believe it is the server, memory has like a 1Gb free and this did not happen before.

BTW: it is only on remote clients, the server client never slows downs.

Right now I am testing on an OSX Placeshifter, took like 30 seconds since I selected the server until I got the Main Menu screen.

I'm running:

Sage server running as a normal app, not service.
Stock STV on the server.
No imports or customizations on the server
2 HD100's - running Comskip Playback STVi and w/secret menus enabled.
1 MVP - running Comskip Playback STVi and w/secret menus enabled.
Win XP Home, SP2
Java 1.6_07

I did not have the problem with 6.3 and my setup has not changed at all since then.

If I get some time this weekend I'll file a bug report.

I just started seeing this about 10 days ago. I had been using 6.4.8 for quite a while without problems. The only thing I changed, as far as I remember, is installing the beta versions of tssplitter and dshowcapture. I'm going to revert as soon as I get a chance. Might this describe any of your situations?

I too had updated to the beta versions. I will drop back as well. They were for fixing the pc client, but maybe they are impacting the Extender as well?

So far I have been following this thread since the first post. And I ran a test test about 4 days ago.

Background

java 1.6.0.10
2x sage servers (one is a network encoder and the main is Windows 2008 std ed.)
3x atsc cards
2x dvb cards
1x PVR 500
and a lot of hard space

Clients
4x stx 100 with SageMC and other stvi's
1x stx-100 in place shifter mode using stock UI with Comskip
1x MVP (SageMC )
1x Place shifter (stock UI)

I have the heap on the main server set at 300 (hex) and I would would still have to restart the sage service about every 2-3 days tops.

I am not at all a java programmer or anything like that at all, but I sure know how to use Google And With a few issues I have dealt with Sage support over the past few years, and the info I read about Garbage collection, I enabled "allow_periodic_explicit_gc=true" and so far this has kept heap usage to a minimum . My current heap usage is 263/528/799 & memory stable around 600,000K and my uptime is 4 days 21 hours. So far I already noticed a difference and the WAF is rising.

Now I took a gamble on this and tested this on my own without emailing sage about it, But I offer this "As is" And I hope more knowledgeable members can chime in if this a fix/patch or just a temp solution.
